The Baltimore Orioles will make their first pick tonight to start off the First-Year Player Draft. The number of picks varies from the Arizona Diamondbacks having four in the first 34 to the Boston Red Sox not picking until #43. There are many things for teams to consider when deciding who to take. Signability based on commitment and/or bonus pool money is a key. Teams shouldn’t and generally don’t draft to need as in other sports because a need today may not be one a few years down the line when these kids will be ready to hit the Show. There are a few pitchers in good spots tonight, making it tough to pinpoint which two to play on Draftkings. Whenever that is the case, the best plan of attack is to filter in a few of them into different tournament lineups. Let’s dig into some players and matchups to take advantage of on this Monday night eight-game main slate.
Andrew Vaughn is a first baseman at the University of California. He was born on April 3rd, 1998 to Diana and Toby Vaughn. Vaughn was a four-year varsity player for Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, California. He made the honor roll at Maria Carrillo all eight semesters that he attended the school. He won the North Bay League Freshman of the Year in 2013, Sophomore of the Year in 2014, Junior of the Year in 2015, and North Bay Player of the Year in 2016. He surprisingly only hit one career home run in high school, but he had an impressive career stat line hitting .380 and only striking out 15 times in four years. At Cal, Vaughn won the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year award in 2017 and was a first-team freshman All-American. He spent the summer of 2017 on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and won team MVP honors after the U.S. beat Japan. As a sophomore in 2018, Vaughn won the Golden Spikes award as the best amateur baseball player in the country. He also won National Player of the Year. Vaughn tied the Cal record for home runs in a single season with 23. Clearly, he is no stranger to winning awards. Vaughn is one of the most decorated baseball players in the country with endless potential.
In my last offering, I suggested using the Rays’ bulk reliever as a streaming option on Wednesday. Jalen Beeks got the call to follow Ryne Stanek as an opener. The outing wasn’t quite was I was expecting or hoping to see from Beeks.
Once considered the unanimous top pitching prospect in baseball, Lucas Giolito entered 2019 off the fantasy radar. The lack of interest in Giolito was justified, as his career has been marred by injuries and disappointment. He finished 2018 with a lackluster 16.1 K%, 11.6 BB%, 6.13 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 5.46 xFIP, 5.37 SIERA, and 8.3 SwStr%. However, the Chicago White Sox are a rebuilding team and they allowed Giolito to pitch through his struggles. This decision appears to be paying dividends early on in 2019.

It’s Eloy season! White Sox fans were teased and tortured with Manny Machado rumors and speculation all off-season. Management made it sound like they really had a seat at the table. The fact of the matter is they did, but they didn’t put the necessary chips down to land Machado. At any rate, there are still a few key young guys to get excited over. What will the 2019 season have in store for the Chicago White Sox?

Sammy Sosa wasn’t just an all-time great right-handed slugger, he was an icon. People who didn’t watch the game or know anything about baseball knew who Sosa was. From his traditional pregame sprint out to right field, to his home run hop, and post home run dugout signals to his mother, he became a household name. But time is running out for Sosa and his chances to enter Baseball’s Hall of Fame. This marks his 7th time on the ballot and if he doesn’t see a huge increase in votes soon, he will most likely not be a Hall of Famer.
