MLB Draft Preview: Matthew Allan

Matthew Allan, RHP (Seminole High School in Florida)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 210 LBs
Age: 18
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
MLB Pipeline Grades – Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 60 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 55 | Overall: 55
Matthew Allan is a right-handed starting pitcher who attends Seminole High School in Florida. He has a strong build with room to fill out more. He pitches with a relatively slow delivery and a large leg raise. His pitching mechanics come naturally to him, requiring little effort. He pitches with more control from the windup as opposed to the stretch. His fastball is accurate and tops out at 97 miles per hour. As he continues to mature physically, he will probably be able to dial his fastball up to 98-99. He was selected to play in the 2018 Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Temporary Bauer Outage?

Trevor Bauer finally broke out in 2018, posting career highs across the board before his season was cut short due to a stress fracture in his right ankle. Bauer would have likely won the Cy Young Award were it not for this injury. Due to this massive breakout, he entered the 2019 MLB season with high expectations, with many analysts forecasting another dominant season. I had Bauer as my 2019 AL Cy Young pick. The season is now two months old, and Bauer is off to a very disappointing start, leading both Indians fans and fantasy owners wondering: what is wrong with Trevor Bauer?

7&7: Best Hitters of The Week of May 20th

You know the rules: the seven best hitters of the week
Max Kepler – OF Twins
As previously mentioned, the Twins are the best team in the league. The team has won ten of their last eleven, and in result, they are the only team to hold a double-digit lead in their division. This well- balanced team has outstanding pitching from Jose Berrios, Martin Perez, and Jake Odorizzi to complement a line-up that features Jorge Polanco, C.J. Cron, Eddie Rosario, our feature this week; Max Kepler. Kepler led the league this week in average (.588), Slugging (1.118), OPS (1.737), and On-base percentage (.619). The German-born son of two ballet dancers has .276 average in 2019, forty-eight points greater than for his career.

Deep Dive: Martin Perez

After signing a 1yr $3.5 MIL in the offseason with the Minnesota Twins, Martin Perez is having a career resurgence year in 2019. In 2019, Perez has tossed 58 IP with a 2.95 ERA, 7.9 H9, 0.8 HR9, 4.0 BB9, 8.7 SO9, and 1.32 WHIP.

Deep Dive: Justin Smoak

Justin Smoak broke out a bit in 2017, hitting .270 with 38 home runs and 90 RBI. His wRC+ was a solid 133, and he looked like a guy that could be a dependable, if not exciting, option at first base for fantasy in 2018. However, he slowed a bit in 2018 instead, hitting only .242 with 25 home runs and 77 RBI. His wRC+ fell to 121, still okay but not what you wanted from a back end first baseman or corner infielder. So what happened to Smoak? Is he doomed to be just another mediocre first base option, or is there more in that bat?

Yonny Chirinos, TB vs TOR (37% Owned)
Chirinos is actually getting the start in this one. It will be his fifth start of the season. Although his walk rate has improved, his strikeout rate and HR/9 have worsened. Still, his ERA has improved to 3.20 from his 3.51 ERA last year. He’ll get the chance to keep rolling against the Toronto Blue Jays, who hit for an 85 wRC+ on the road and a 75 wRC+ against righties.
