Carroll is an outfielder for Lakeside High School in Seattle, Washington. He has played for the U.S. National Team, as well as in the Under Armour All-American game and the Perfect Game All-American game, in which he won the MVP award. He is an absolute baseball addict.
In the summer of 2019, Carroll spent minimal time at his home in Seattle. He played for two different travel teams, one in Virginia, the other in Walla Walla. This was the same summer that he played with the U.S. National Team as well. This was concerning to Lakeside coach Kellen Sundin, who questioned if Carroll was being a high school kid and having fun with his summer. He asked Carroll if he had a summer at all or saw friends. What was Carroll’s response? “No coach, this is what I want to do.” This kid is a pure professional and student of the game.
Strengths:
Carroll has an excellent feel for the strike zone. He doesn’t chase pitches outside of the zone too much and is willing to take walks. He has plus speed which is showcased on the basepaths and defensively in center field. Carroll is an excellent center fielder with fantastic range and a decent arm. His arm will develop more as he fills in. Out of all the high school hitters in this draft, Carroll is one of the best, if not the best, pure hitter. He uses the entire field when hitting.
He does a great job going with the ball when it is on the outside corner. He rarely ever strikes out. His power is very raw right now but could develop more as he builds muscle and finishes his development. It’s very hard to judge high schooler’s tools whether they’re hitters or pitchers, because a lot of the time, it doesn’t work out like people believe it will.
Weaknesses:
There’s a reason that Carroll is my favorite prospect in this draft. I see no true weaknesses. As I said, his power isn’t there yet, but he could very easily become a guy who hits between 15-25 home runs per year which is very respectable for a center fielder.
Overview:
Carroll has all the tools necessary to become a perennial all-star in the MLB. He is very fast, uses the whole field when hitting the ball, and plays an excellent center field. There’s no reason that he should have to move from his natural position to a different outfield spot, but he is capable of playing anywhere in the outfield with ease. The kid is already a professional. He lives, eats, and breathes baseball. There’s nothing you want more from a young prospect.
Draft Prediction: Round 1, Pick 11 to the Toronto Blue Jays
Carroll is projected to be selected around pick 15, but the Blue Jays could be the team that steals him at 11. For those who don’t know, you don’t draft by team need in the MLB Draft. Carroll’s value is too good to pass up. I had a hard time picking his draft position because he could get picked anywhere between pick seven and pick 16. Whoever gets this kid could be getting a future superstar.
