The Reds are a very temperamental team from year to year when we look at the league as a whole. Some years, the Reds at this point in the season are playing astonishingly well, and at other times, the Reds perform somewhere close to the bottom of the NL. The Reds attempted to right the ship this offseason however.
Center fielder Nick Senzel, the Cincinnati Reds’ top prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 5 overall prospect, is getting the call to the show on Friday. The Reds are sitting in the cellar of the NL Central with a record of 13-18, as of May 2. Senzel will be a boost to the Reds offense and hopefully boost Cincinnati’s attendance at Great American Ballpark. Their average attendance per game so far this year is just over 15,000. The Reds offense right now is ranked 25th in the league overall, and last in batting average with .210. Their best hitters are Joey Votto and Jesse Winker, with batting averages of .232 and .224, respectively. Winker has 13 RBI and 8 home runs with a .805 OPS.

Probably the biggest surprise so far is the horrific start for the defending world champions. The big reason right now is the pitching’ the team ranks near the bottom in almost every major statical category including ERA (27th), ER (30th), BAA (26th), opponent total bases (30th), home runs given up (29th), hits given up (28th) and lists of things I can mention. We believed the bullpen would be Red Sox’s Achilles heel, but it been starting pitching. The best ERA among starters with more than one start is David Price with 6.00. CY Young winning ace Chris Sale is having a notable a rough start, giving up 13 ER in 13 innings.
Baseball season is officially here. Everybody knows the teams that will contend for the postseason, but it is a long 162 game season, and there could be some surprise teams.
It’s a mere 5 days until the real opening day, with apologies to the Mariners and Athletics. For those of you under the age of 50, MLB at one time had a traditional opening day and game, featuring the Cincinnati Reds. I miss those days. I also think the designated hitter is an abomination, to paraphrase Crash Davis. So you can surmise my feelings on the impending implementation of the DH in the National League. I offer my own solution to the imbalance between leagues, abolish the DH altogether.
It was another atrocious season for the Reds last year. The Reds have been consistently terrible for the last four seasons, winning between 64-68 games in each of those seasons. The obvious problem last year was starting pitcher.
After five straight subpar seasons of under-.500 records following Dusty Baker’s exit, the Reds are primed to make some noise in 2019. With a solid farm system, ranked No. 6 in all of baseball, 4 of their top 5 in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, they have the pieces to end their rebuild and contend for years to come.
Let me say this right off the top. Scott Rolen deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. What is even more of an affront is that he only received 10.2% of the vote last year. Sometimes I don’t understand what the voters are looking at, but I will attempt to help them out.
Every year there are teams who rise to the top because of an unsung hero, a rookie stepping in, or a triumphant return from injury by a veteran. On the flip side, there are teams who are at the bottom and underachieving or simply too young and rebuilding. Here are the bottom 10 teams in the league and some bright spots that those teams can possibly build on moving forward.
