Remembering Hank Gathers: Basketball Isn’t Worth Dying For

Today is the 29th anniversary of Hank Gathers’ tragic death. If you don’t know who that is, don’t worry. At this point, after this many years, it’s quite easy to have never known who Gathers was, as a player or as a man. But for people who did get the chance to follow his career, they won’t forget easily.

For the sake of readers who either want to learn or reminisce, for the sake of my own undying need to write about the greatest phenomenon the world of basketball missed out on for terribly tragic reasons, and, hopefully, for the sake of Gathers’ legacy – so even a few more people can know of his story – it’s time to take a trip back through the time machine to meet a kid who loved basketball named Hank.

Elvis Andrus is a 20/20 Threat. Ask Me How.

For the record, no one that I have shared this information with is buying it or believes there is any truth to it whatsoever. Let’s throw out Elvis Andrus’ 2018, which was cut short by an erratic pitch that broke his elbow and kept him out of action for 65 games. Let’s not mention that he hit 6 home runs in only 428 plate appearances and before 2017, he had never hit more than 8 HRs, while averaging 650.4 plate appearances in the 8 seasons prior. We also won’t talk about his career-low .256 batting average. But when you look at his recent profile, Elvis Andrus is a 20/20 Threat.

The Scorecrow Top 100 NFL Players #20-1

The writers at TheScorecrow.com decided to get together and come up with their version of a Top 100 NFL players from the 2018 season. Each writer was invited to submit a ranked list of their top 25 NFL players. The votes were then counted using a weighted average method. This means that a 1st place vote was worth more than a 25th place vote.

Players ranked 1st on a list received 25 points, 2nd = 24 points and so on down to 1 point for a 25th place vote. Each players points were added up and then listed from least to most to generate our list of top 100 players. The top few players were fairly common on all the lists, but after that it was interesting. We hope you enjoy our rankings and would love to read your comments on our list. Special thanks to Beth Sullivan for tabulating the votes and getting this project together.

It’s Been 60 Games, but Denver’s Starting Five is Back Together Again

It all began when Will Barton landed awkwardly on a fastbreak layup and hurt his hip and core against the Phoenix Suns on October 20. Since then, a lingering hamstring injury to Gary Harris. A broken toe as well as ankle soreness for Paul Millsap. An ankle sprain for Jamal Murray and a controversial suspension of Nikola Jokic. Every starter has missed at least one game this season. Somehow, the incredible amount of depth the Denver Nuggets have has kept them in the top of the daunting Western Conference, but as the team begins the final stretch of the regular season, it’s time to get the opening night Starting Five back on the floor.
