Did the Los Angeles Lakers make the right decision by drafting Lonzo Ball over De’Aaron Fox? Let’s compare the 2nd and 5th overall picks in the 2017 NBA Draft and see, a year later, who has started his career off better.
Last season, the Sacramento Kings drafted Kentucky guard De’Aaron Fox. He was my favorite player from the draft. However, it was not the best of seasons for Fox or the Kings. It was understandable because they were a young team and did not have many veterans to mentor them. They finished last season 27-55. It was a disappointing season but there is a lot of potential on this team. Fox averaged just 11.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1 steals, 0.3 blocks, and 2.4 turnovers per game, on .412 FG%. Some people started calling Fox a bust and saying he is not the real deal, he’s overhyped, etc. But I knew that Fox would definitely come back better than ever and put the league on notice.
If you love to watch top-notch scoring and three-point shooting, this game was for you. Stephen Curry led the Golden State Warriors with 42 points, including going 10-20 from behind the arc. Buddy Hield did his best to keep the Sacramento Kings in it, exploding for 32 points and setting a new career high with 8 triples in 13 tries. Justin Jackson set a new career high with 28 points, shooting 10-14 from the field. The Warriors continue their quest to break seemingly every three-point record there is, combining with the Kings to make 41 for the game, a new NBA milestone.
It’s still very early in the NBA season to get carried away with a team but the Sacramento Kings are off to the most surprising 8-6 start of any NBA team I can remember. After Monday night’s win over the San Antonio Spurs, a lot more people are starting to take notice. The Kings have not seen the playoffs since the 2005-06 season, when they were eliminated in the first round. But this season looks and feels different, even though it is still too early to tell.
The Sacramento Kings were 12th in the Western Conference last season going 27-55. Will they improve enough to make the playoffs this year? Or will it be another year of tanking?
