Following the completion of the second of two Cup Series events in Daytona, NASCAR moves just a half hour down the road to Homestead for the Dixie 400.
The Cup Series stays in Daytona for another week. This following last Sunday’s season debut, which saw Front Row driver Michael McDowell collect his first-ever Daytona 500 win. However, instead of racing on the traditional 2.5-mile Superspeedway, they will be running on the Daytona Road Course.
The Silly Season had a handful of important driver shuffles, the most notable being the signing of Kyle Larson to Hendricks Motorsports. We’d also get the announcement of a brand-new team partnership between former NBA Player Michael Jordan and NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin.
Coming into Sunday with one last opportunity in which to qualify himself into the Championship Four and 26 points below cutoff, Chase Elliott was not prepared to leave anything to chance, as he was pretty much going to have to win in order to punch his ticket to Phoenix. In the end, there would be no doubt who was the dominant driver.
Kevin Harvick appeared to be sitting pretty Sunday at Kansas, having led 85 of the 219 laps run. However, a pit stop with 48 laps remaining would wind up costing him in the end. After beating Harvick out of the pit stalls, Joey Logano would manage to get the jump he needed on the final restart.
Chase Elliott survived miserable conditions last Sunday in Charlotte to come away with back-to-back wins on the relatively new road course. Joey Logano tried to keep things close with Elliott but was unable to make those most of a final restart with 10 laps remaining. By race’s end, Logano had faded behind by three seconds. Erik Jones, Kurt Busch, and Ryan Blaney would round out the top five.
It’s time to put that wild finish at Talladega behind us and head out to Charlotte, NC, to finish out the round of 16. Charlotte Roval is still a relative new event on the Cup Series schedule, having moved on from the 500 mile regular oval. It’s expected that there will be a capacity crowd showing up for this event due to a state-mandated requirement.
After more than 16 years, Kurt Busch’s dream of winning at his home track of Las Vegas came to fruition on Sunday. Fittingly came with a bit of lady luck considering the circumstances. It all stemmed from a late-race caution for track debris during a green flag pit stop, which would leave Busch as the lone playoff competitor still on the lead lap.
