The league’s championship teams of the past two seasons are front and center for tonight’s card. The red-hot Washington Capitals play host to the Montreal Canadiens and the St.Louis Blues visit the Columbus Blue Jackets. The other games aren’t as clear cut for me but you certainly can find some good prospects for production. Let’s dig into it once again for some Ice Picks!
CORE MUST-HAVES ⭐
Alex Ovechkin WAS W $8,200
There is perhaps no team in the NHL as offensively gifted as the Capitals. They rank first in the league in goals for per game at 3.85. The Canadiens rank 19th in goals allowed per contest with a mark of 3.06. Washington has had 14 of their season-long 20 games go over the suggested total. They have lit the lamp 43 times in their past 10. Ovie is a monster in terms of shot volume, ice time and offensive opportunities. In three games versus the “Habs” last year, Ovechkin was good for four goals.
Evgeny Kuznetsov WAS C $6,600
As good as Ovechkin has been Kuznetsov has been even better if we narrow it down to the last five Capital games. How about nine points (3G, 6A)! The Capitals have a boatload of talent and now that Kuznetsov is rolling the powerplay is poised to be even more lethal. Washington has the league’s ninth-best powerplay(22.86%), they are matched up against Montreal’s 28th ranked penalty kill(73.7%).
Jaden Schwartz STL W $5,200
Schwartz will be given an ample amount of opportunities on the Blues top forward line as well as plenty of powerplay time now that Vladimir Tarasenko is out long-term. This could be a turning point for Schwartz after starting the season with a rather mediocre 4G and 11A in 19 games. Columbus is just 3-5-1 at home this season and gives up 3.33 goals per game which sits them 23rd. They also have the 22nd ranked penalty kill at a rate of 77.3%. The Blues powerplay is among the league’s best with a rate of 26.2%(third overall).
VALUE PLAYS
Robert Thomas STL W $3,200
Another player that stands to benefit from the injury to Taresenko is Robert Thomas. The highly touted Thomas is projected to play alongside Schwartz and Brayden Schenn on St.Louis’ first trio of forwards, The Blues organization thinks highly of the young Thomas, let’s see if if can step up in a bigger role.
Other Players to Consider
Justin Faulk STL D $3,700, Jared McCann PIT C $4,600
