Chicago Bears vs. Oakland Raiders in London: Week 5 Preview

The Oakland Raiders will look to crack the tough Chicago Bears’ defense in Week 5 of the 2019 NFL season.

Week 5 brings us an interesting matchup between the Oakland Raiders and the Chicago Bears as it will take place overseas in London, giving neither team the home-field advantage.

The surprisingly decent Oakland Raiders are 2-2 heading into this week and coming off of a huge Week 4 win over the Indianapolis Colts in which they scored 31 points. On the other hand, the Chicago Bears enter the week with a solid 3-1 record, looking to keep their three-game winning streak alive.

Unfortunately, during last week’s win over the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears lost starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to a shoulder injury only a few plays into the game. However, backup quarterback Chase Daniel stepped in and played very well, completing 22 of 30 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown. Trubisky has been ruled doubtful for the bout in London and isn’t expected to play, so Daniel will most likely get his first start of 2019. He will look to continue his success against a Raiders defense that has allowed an average of 280.3 passing yards a game. This could be another chance for the veteran quarterback to prove himself, but more importantly a chance to get another big win for the Bears.

Injuries are not as concerning for the Raiders. However, they did lose starting linebacker Vontaze Burfict for the rest of the season after he was suspended by the NFL for continuing to break the helmet-to-helmet rules following a dirty hit on Indianapolis tight end Jack Doyle last week. Derek Carr showed up on the injury report following Sunday’s win over the Colts but had a precautionary x-ray on his leg later that day and the results came back negative. He is not in danger of missing any time.

The Raiders’ offensive line will need to be very strong if they want to win because the Bears are very effective at getting to the quarterback, especially with Khalil Mack, who already has four-and-a-half sacks and four forced fumbles. This also marks the first time Mack will face the Raiders since they traded him away during the 2018 offseason. He will be hungry and looking to get to former teammate Derek Carr as much as possible. On the other hand, if the Bears can get an early lead and let their defense do the rest, they’ll be in great shape to return to Chicago with another win.

The two teams last faced off back in Week 4 of the 2015 season where the Bears narrowly beat the Raiders, 22-20, at Soldier Field. Quarterback Jay Cutler led a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter that ended in a Robbie Gould 49-yard game-winning field goal. The all-time series between the Raiders and Bears is currently tied at seven apiece so the winner of this game will claim the all-time series lead.

Despite the elite Bears defense and the success they’ve had so far this season, Chase Daniel will struggle on the offensive end and the Raiders will get a crucial win to improve to 3-2.
