Over the course of this offseason, the Seattle Mariners have entirely revamped their farm system. The struggle to rebuild the system has been challenging. However, the team is seemingly moving in the right direction entering the 2019 season. After unloading large contracts and aging veterans, Mariner fans have something to be excited about this year and beyond.
I have heard people discussing if Luke Walton should be fired and Mark Jackson or Jason Kidd hired to coach the Los Angeles Lakers. Let me start by saying this, the only coach who doesn’t have a coaching job in the NBA now, that should be considered to take over Luke Walton’s job, is Stan Van Gundy. The reason why I believe Van Gundy should have a job as a coach is that in the twelve seasons he was a coach, he had a 523-384 record, and he is born in California. So what better than to coach a team you grew up watching and hearing about constantly?
What a journey it has been so far for first-year Pelicans player and fifth-year pro Julius Randle up until this point in his career. Julius came into the league after a very successful lone season at Kentucky where he posted 15 ppg and 10 rpg going all the way to the National Championship game before losing to UConn.
The NBA trade deadline is vastly approaching on Thursday so teams are scrambling to trade some of their players for good value. Kristaps Porzingis has been frustrated with the New York Knicks since last season as he decided not to attend the exit interview over a dispute with now former head coach Jeff Hornacek about the team’s direction and those concerns about the team seemed to resurface in a meeting with management yesterday.
Keeping it fresh in the National League West, we transition our series to the desert, to dive into the Arizona Diamondbacks’ top five prospects. Contrary to an assumed belief, the D’backs system is loaded with solid talent, led by a young right-handed pitcher looking to lead his team over the next decade.
The Tampa Bay Rays have developed an impressive Minor league system. They are currently ranked the #4 best farm team in baseball, with their Top 6 Prospects all solidified in MLB’s Top 100 Prospect List. While they have efficiently developed their homegrown talent, they have done equally as well among their international signings. The Rays are on the rise and they have established themselves as contenders for years to come.
It all began in January of 2018 with the re-hiring of Jon Gruden. He replaced the dismissed Jack Del Rio and everything seemed to be headed on the up an up in Oakland.
There are teams like the San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves that have dedicated years of losing to rebuilding their farm systems. Then there are other teams who have unheralded minor league systems featuring quality talent. As I began delving into the Texas Rangers, I realized this was the predicament they were in. Not a single major publication has the Rangers within their top-5 minor league systems, but nevertheless, they credit the organization for acquiring and developing solid amateur talent.
A Second blockbuster deal during the current season has been made. After Jake Muzzin was acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the Los Angeles Kings, one of the biggest trade baits is off the charts too. Pittsburgh Penguins traded Derick Brassard and Riley Sheahan to the Florida Panthers for a couple of centers, Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann, a couple of fourth-round draft picks and one second-round draft pick in 2019 NHL Draft.
We thought this season was already over. Prior to last night, the Golden State Warriors had looked unstoppable, going 13-1 in their last 14 games, and had been even more dominant (if that’s possible) than usual over the last month. Stephen Curry is a making a charge for MVP. Kevin Durant has been so unerringly consistent that the NBA world seems to have forgotten that he is having another sensational year. Klay Thompson can score 50 points while barely dribbling the basketball. They perhaps lacked a little depth and were vulnerable at center, but the small matter DeMarcus Cousins’ has solved that issue emphatically. In short, Golden State seemed a lock for the title.
The Minnesota Twins have drafted well and it shows. Coming into 2019, the Twins Minor League system ranks as the 6th best farm system in baseball and is headlined by 3 Tier 1 Prospects who are destined to take the league by storm. The Twins have a bright outlook and their homegrown talent may put them in contention sooner than expected:
