Two games into their 2020-2021 Premier League season, Manchester United is far from being an impressive team. After two games, the club has put up mediocre to very poor results. As a result, this further increases their bad reputation of being a team that is completely unpredictable.
After falling in their opening game 3-1 to Crystal Palace F.C. at Old Trafford, the Red Devils followed with an unconvincing 3-2 win against Brighton on the road. The team has very little to no concentration. Overall, they have a poor mentality and team chemistry. It’s obvious they’ve entered this season not ready to play.
Controversial Victory
Their first win of the season comes under controversial circumstances. After being dominated and outclassed by Brighton for a majority of the game, the Red Devils were closing in on a win. However, Brighton would tie in the closing seconds of injury time. The controversy of the finish is due to the fact that Manchester United’s game-winning goal came after the final whistle.
When the final whistle was blown it looked as though the game had ended on a 2-2 draw. Manchester United players would immediately surround the referee and demand a penalty for an alleged handball. A check through the VAR confirmed the handball and the penalty was given and converted by Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes Solid Play
According to Goal.com, the Red Devils were given the penalty since the handball took place just before the final whistle was blown. Since his arrival at Old Trafford, Fernandes has played a role in 17 goals of his 16 appearances in Premier League play. In addition, since arriving at Manchester United, Fernandes has nine goals and eight assists in Premier Leauge play. Furthermore, he has 13 goals in a Manchester United jersey.
However, while Fernandes is continually growing, Paul Pogba remains quiet. Manchester United fans are hoping to see more from the French midfielder. Donny van de Beek is another name fans are hoping to see more from. The same goes for Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, etc. With all the talent available, there’s no reason for Manchester United to not be able to put positive results. The losses and poor performances are embarrassing. Furthermore, they’re unacceptable.

Get Back on Track
The Red Devils are very lucky to not be winless in their first two games. Their inability to finish strong already damages their reputation. Winning a game under controversial circumstances adds insult to injury. Quite frankly, they are not a good team.
Manchester United plays Tottenham next week at Old Trafford. At this point, the Red Devils cannot afford to come into a game unprepared anymore. Their next few games are very important as they play the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, and Newcastle.
Next week’s game against Tottenham is a must-win for the Red Devils. There’s no room for negative results this early into the season. Winning is the only thing that matters for Manchester United.
