Week 9 Recap: New Orleans Saints vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Week 9 Recap: New Orleans Saints vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The New Orleans Saints faced off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football with expectations of a high-scoring affair. Instead, the game was a major disappointment as the Bucs fell apart and the Saints exploded en route to a 38-3 victory. With the win, New Orleans improved to 6-2 and swept the season series between the two teams.

Taysom Hill, the Saints utility player, had himself a night. He did everything on the field, running for 54 yards, hauling in a 21-yard reception, and throwing twice for 48 yards. Drew Brees also played well, throwing for 222 yards and four touchdowns including his NFL-record 564th.

First Half

Tampa Bay played one of the worst halfs in NFL history and to top it off, it was on primetime television. The Bucs’ first four possessions resulted in three and outs, followed by two Brady interceptions and a turnover on downs for a total of 105 yards and a measly five first downs.

Defensively, the Buccaneers could not stop the Saints. Brees carved up their defense for three touchdown passes, one each to Emmanuel Sanders, Tre’Quan Smith, and Adam Trautman. Alvin Kamara also found the end zone before the break.

Second Half

When the Saints fumbled the football on their first possession of the second half, there was some hope that Tampa Bay could get something going. However, they turned the ball over on downs in the red zone and then Brady threw an interception on the following possession, effectively ending the game in only the third quarter.

Brees connected with tight end Josh Hill early in the fourth quarter to bump the lead to 38-0 and later the Buccaneers avoided the shutout after Ryan Succop nailed a field goal on their last possession.

Highlights

The Saints (6-2) now hold the tiebreaker over their division foe after winning both matchups this season. They will try to add to their five-game win streak next week against an injury-decimated 49ers team. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers (6-3) will look to bounce back against a Carolina Panthers squad that gave Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs problems in Week 8.
