The Week 6 Sunday Night Football game featured the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers meeting up for the 141st time. The 49ers lead the all-time series between the two teams and they were looking for a third consecutive win against the Rams on Sunday night. They succeeded and were able to get the win they so desperately needed.
San Francisco had yet won a game at home this season and came into this week with a 2-3 record, hungry for the victory. The 49ers kept their offense on the field for most of the game, while barely exposing their depleted defense.
First Half
The 49ers opened the game with possession of the ball and finished the drive three minutes later with a six-yard pass between Jimmy Garoppolo and Deebo Samuel, who took it 11 yards for the first touchdown of the game.
The Rams didn’t produce any points in their opening drive. Both teams exchanged downs in the next few drives. San Francisco ran five and a half minutes off the clock in their third drive to finish on top 7-0 going into the second quarter.
San Francisco scored on their first of the second quarter after Garoppolo threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle to increase the lead to 14-0.
The Rams answered in their opening drive with a touchdown after Jared Goff connected with Robert Woods for 10 yards. Dion Jordan blocked Samuel Sloman’s extra point attempt, so the Rams were on board 14-6 with nine minutes to go.
The next 49ers’ possession lasted for over seven minutes and 13 plays before Garoppolo connected with rookie Brandon Aiyuk for his first career touchdown, widening the gap 21-6 with just under two minutes left in the half. The Rams spent less than one minute on the field before punting. San Francisco held on to the 15 point lead heading into halftime.
The 49ers’ offense dominated the field in the first half. They nearly doubled the total amount of plays (41-21) and put almost 300 yards on the books compared to 102 yards from the Rams. San Francisco kept the Los Angeles defensive line on the field for 21 minutes as opposed to the eight and a half minutes of offensive time on the field.
Second Half
The Rams had the first opportunity to score in the second half and converted the opening drive into three points with a 42-yard field goal by Sloman. The scoreboard read 21-9 with 12:04 to go.
For the first time in the game, the 49ers didn’t put any points up in their first drive and gave the ball back to the Rams in under two minutes.
The next big move happened a few drives later when the 49ers’ defense not only held the Rams for four downs at goal, but Jason Verrett also intercepted a pass between Goff and Josh Reynolds in the end zone. The score remained 21-9 leading into the final quarter of the game.
Neither team produced any points in their final opening drives and exchanged downs for nearly ten minutes before Robbie Gould kicked a 49-yard field goal to give the 49ers a comfortable 15 point lead. at 24-9.
The Rams came back in their next drive and answered with a 40-yard touchdown pass between Goff and Reynolds, narrowing the 49ers lead to 24-16 with just under four minutes to go.
San Francisco kept control of the ball for the rest of the game and secured their first home victory.

Next week, the 49ers will travel to Foxborough, Mass. to face the New England Patriots and the Rams return home to face the Chicago Bears in their Week 7 matchup.
