Week 6 Recap: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills

The originally scheduled Thursday Night Football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills went down on Monday evening. A battle of two 4-1 teams saw the Chiefs coming out on top, 26-17. They used a ground-and-pound attack to run away with it. The Chiefs racked up 245 yards on the ground led by rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire‘s 161. The team that normally relies on the “Air Attack” relied heavily on the “Edwards-Helaire” attack. I’ll see myself out. This team still has Le’Veon Bell coming too after signing him this past week.

First Half

The Bills started the game going three-and-out while the Chiefs got a couple first downs before also punting. On the Bills’ next drive, they drove 38 yards to the Chiefs 30 and started the scoring off as a 48-yard field goal attempt by Tyler Bass went through the uprights. The Chiefs almost immediately answered as they drove 75 yards on five plays in under three minutes. The drive started out with an Edwards-Helaire 31-yard run to the Buffalo 44-yard line. Another big play came two minutes later as Patrick Mahomes found Demarcus Robinson for a 22-yard pass to the Bills’ 11. One play later, Mahomes went to Travis Kelce for an 11-yard touchdown pass to go up 7-3 following the extra point. The first quarter ended with the Bills in possession of the ball at the Chief 46-yard line after they went 29 yards on six plays.

It took eight more plays for the Bills to find paydirt. The biggest actual play on the drive was a 13-yard Josh Allen scramble. But the drive was vastly helped by a pass interference on Charvarius Ward with Allen targeting Stefon Diggs. On the following play, Allen connected with Diggs for a 4-yard touchdown pass. The Cheifs drove down the field on a long, 12-play 6 1/2 minute drive. Edwards-Helaire ran for 36 yards on the drive which finished with Mahomes connecting with Kelce again for a 12-yard touchdown. The Bills were forced to punt on their next drive but then got the ball back at midfield with 16 seconds left after a Kansas City fumble. Allen passed to Diggs for a 15-yard pass which set the Bills up for a 52-yard field goal attempt. Bass missed the try, however, as the half ended with the Chiefs holding onto a 13-10 lead.

Second Half

The second half started the same way the first half did, with the teams trading punts. The Chiefs then went on another long, 87-yard 13-play drive that took nearly eight minutes. Edwards-Helaire had a 17-yard run on the drive and it was capped off by a Darrel Williams 13-yard touchdown run on fourth down. The Chiefs then forced another Bills’ three-and-out adding another field goal to go up 23-10. The big play on the 10-play drive was a 21-yard pass to Demarcus Robinson. An unnecessary roughness call turned the play into a 36-yard play. The drive ended with a Harrison Butker hitting a 37-yard field goal.

The Bills didn’t take long to answer as they went 62 yards in six plays. Allen scrambled for 11 yards on the drive while also passing for 14 and 22 yards on back-to-back plays to Diggs and Cole Beasley. He then connected with Beasley again for an eight-yard touchdown pass. This made the game 23-17 and all the Bills needed was a stop to have a chance to pull off the comeback. But the Chiefs didn’t let that happen as they drove 75 yards on 12 plays, capped off by a Butker 30-yard field goal to put the game on ice. Two big pass plays on the drive were to Kelce for 20 yards and Bryon Pringle for 37 yards on 3rd-and-12. A desperation heave by Allen with under two minutes remaining was intercepted with one hand by Daniel Sorenson to officially seal the game for the Chiefs.

Highlights

The 4-2 Bills head to the Meadowlands to take on the 0-6 New York Jets on Sunday. The 5-1 Chiefs head to Mile High to take on the 2-3 Denver Broncos. The way things go in the NFL and how these teams have played, I would say these are fairly “easy” wins for both clubs. Crazier things have happened, however, so don’t be afraid to “Old Takes Exposed” me if something crazy indeed happens.
