Triston Casas Shines in Tokyo

Triston Casas Team USA Red Sox

Over the last few years, Triston Casas has become a well-known name in Boston. The 21-year-old is Boston’s top prospect and is now making a name for himself on the world’s stage. In his first Olympic appearance, Casas has made headlines thanks to his power. Over the past week he has given the world a preview of the future, even as the Red Sox have lost five straight games stateside.

Thus far, Casas has lead Team USA’s offense at the Olympics. The Florida native has hit three home runs, including a three-run blast on Monday that temporarily gave the United States the lead. Although the Americans were unable to hold the advantage, Casas’s opposite-field power was on full display. Despite facing different styles of pitching, he has excelled. The bigger the moment, the more comfortable Casas has looked.

In the first three games of the tournament, the 6’4″ Casas had an RBI in every game. Hitting in the cleanup spot, he has been a consistent source of offense. While he has excelled with the bat, Casas has also opened eyes with his defense. The former first-round pick has made multiple heads-up plays and been a complete player. Over the last week, he has built on his ongoing success in the minors.

Through 46 games for Portland this year, he has posted a .271 average. During that span, however, he has only hit six home runs and has totaled 12 extra-base hits. Casas has not hit for a lot of power this year, but that has not been the case in the Olympics. In the tournament, he is hitting .318 with eight RBI and is consistently making hard contact. That is the player Boston expects Casas to be when he does get the call to the majors.

On a team loaded with talent, Casas’s professionalism has stood out. His performance, however, has not surprised his former coach Andy Stankiewicz.

Asked about Casas’s success, Stankiewicz said, “Seeing his success in the international stage in the Olympics, I think those that have been around him – obviously a fantastic accomplishment, I don’t want to minimize what he’s done – but those people who have been around him have seen that more than once.”

Although the Olympics are nearly over, it has been a tournament Casas will never forget. During the games, he has shown why scouts remain so high on his game.
