Illinois and Texas were in action yesterday while there are five ranked teams playing later tonight, including #1 Gonzaga. Here’s everything you need to know.
Welcome to today’s Daily Dunk where we recap all of college basketball’s biggest games from yesterday and give you a look at the matchups to watch later today!
Yesterday’s Biggest Games
Upset: #4 Michigan State 65 vs. Northwestern 79
We had a huge upset go down on the night before the new AP Poll is released. Michigan State was trailing for the final 38 minutes of the game before the final buzzer sounded. Their leading scorer only put up 11 points. The Spartans shot 38.8 percent from the field as a team compared to the Wildcats’ field goal percentage of 52.9 (27-for-51).
Northwestern only has one loss so far this season, so a win against a top-four team might get them enough votes for a spot in the top-25.
#9 Creighton 76 vs. UConn 74
Creighton came into this game after a convincing win against St. John’s but UConn kept it close all game and only ended up losing by a single possession. Creighton goes when Marcus Zegarowski plays well and he only scored 11 points. That total was the third-most on his own team, which was a reason why the Bluejays struggled to put points on the board.
Creighton will move down the rankings that come out on Monday after being upset by unranked Marquette last Monday and barely escaping unranked UConn.
Upset: #13 Illinois 88 vs. #19 Rutgers 91
What a win for the Scarlet Knights. They were a team that wasn’t getting much national attention, but they got it by beating Illinois on Sunday. Let’s remember that Illinois was ranked as high as #6 a couple of weeks back when they beat Duke on the road, so this is a resume-building win for Rutgers.
Jacob Young, Montaz Mathis, and Ron Harper Jr. all scored at least 15 points and combined for 66 in the win. Illinois had a tough schedule to start their season, and this is their third loss already in eight games. This wasn’t a bad loss considering the opponent, so they shouldn’t drop too much in the new rankings.
Rutgers moves to 6-0 and will definitely be moving up the AP Poll after their most impressive win of the season.
Oklahoma State 74 vs. #11 Texas 77
Potential No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham went up against one of the best teams in the nation on Sunday afternoon and showed out, scoring 25 points. However, it wasn’t quite enough to upset the Longhorns.
Texas won the turnover battle and outrebounded Oklahoma State, which ended up being crucial in being able to escape with their seventh win of the season. Texas’ next big matchup comes on Saturday when they face off against Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse.
