The Houston Texans traveled to Kansas City on Sunday to play against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6 of the 2019 NFL Season.
The Chiefs came into the game having won three of the last four matchups with Houston, including their last meeting in 2017 and in 2013 when the two teams last met in Kansas City.
In the opening drive of the game, the Chiefs received the ball first and, despite having three offensive penalties called on the team, Patrick Mahomes connected with Tyreek Hill for a 46-yard touchdown –– giving Kansas City a 7-0 lead early into the game.
On the Houston opening drive, Carlos Hyde rushed up the middle and fumbled the ball, giving possession to Kansas City when Frank Clark recovered the ball at the Houston 18-yard line.
Kansas City again committed two offensive penalties in their next possession, making it a much longer kick for Harrison Butker than it should’ve been, but the Chiefs kicker nailed the 41-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0 with just over 10 minutes left in the quarter.
The Texans answered in the next possession following 12 plays for 49 yards. Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked a 44-yard field goal closing the gap to 10-3 with 5:46 left in the quarter.
The Chiefs came back in the next possession to put another touchdown on the board after Mahomes connected with Damien Williams for the 14-yard touchdown pass extending the lead to touchdowns with a minute-and-a-half left to go.
Houston finished out the first quarter following three plays and started the second quarter on the 48-yard line with the second down and one yard to go. Seven plays later, Watson threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Duke Johnson putting six more on the board, but not getting the extra point after Fairbairn missed the kick.
The score was 17-9 with just over 12 minutes left in the first half. Kansas City was unable to answer the touchdown, as Tashaun Gipson Sr. intercepted a Mahomes deep pass, giving the ball back to Houston.
The Texans did use the interception to their advantage and put seven more on the board after Carlos Hyde rushed for a two-yard touchdown, Fairbairn kicked the PAT and the Texans took the lead 17-16 with just over three minutes to play in the first half.
Kansas City tried to answer the Texans’ score with a 50-yard field goal attempt kicked by Butker, but the ball went wide right and there was no score.
Kansas City ended the Houston possession early when Juan Thornhill intercepted a Watson pass with 39 seconds left on the clock, and then the Chiefs fumbled on the first play of the following possession after Mahomes was sacked and the ball was recovered by Bernardrick McKinney at the Kansas City three-yard line.
This gave Houston one last chance to score in the first half and Watson rushed for the touchdown giving the Texans the six-point lead going into halftime, 23-17.
Houston received the ball first to open the second half and after ten plays the drive ended with another missed field goal kick by Fairbairn, this time for 46 yards. The Chiefs put up the first points of the second half when Mahomes again connected with Hill for a six-yard touchdown catch, and Butker kicked the PAT to give Kansas City the one-point lead, 24-23 with six-and-a-half minutes on the clock.
Watson gave up another possession when a pass intended for Hopkins was intercepted by Charvarius Ward, but the Chiefs were unable to convert that mistake into points, going three and out.
Houston’s first possession of the final quarter was just over eight-and-a-half minutes long and went for 12 plays and 93 yards before Watson took the ball in for the one-yard rushing touchdown, and then connected with Hopkins for the two-point conversion attempt, taking the lead right back, 31-24, with 6:17 left in the game.
The Chiefs then again went three and out in what would be their final possession of the game and the Texans held onto the seven-point lead to cement the victory on the road.
Both teams played multiple lengthy possessions, but Deshaun Watson and the Texans offense proved to be the stronger of the two teams in producing offensive yards and points.
Next week, Kansas City will face the Denver Broncos and Houston will face the Indianapolis Colts.
