Terriers Victorious Over Crusaders in Turnpike Trophy Matchup

The Holy Cross Crusaders were soundly defeated by their rival Boston University Terriers 54-40 in the first Turnpike Trophy matchup of the season.

The Terriers (9-8, 5-1) were led by senior guard Cedric Hankerson, who made history today as he became the 17th Terrier to achieve 1,200 career points. Hankerson scored 10 points and shot 50 percent from the field. Sophmore forward Tyler Scanlon flirted with a double-double, as he scored eight points and led the Terriers with nine rebounds.

The Crusaders (4-13, 1-5) shot their worst game of the season, shooting a mere 32 percent from the field and 20 percent from three-point range. Holy Cross’s 40 points in this game were their lowest tally of the season. The Crusaders have also lost seven out of their last eight games.

Freshman guard Austin Butler continued his hot streak for the Crusaders, as he led the team in scoring and rebounds with 11 points and six rebounds. Butler played a team-high 31 minutes and shot 50 percent from the field.

The Turnpike Trophy is a trophy that is competed for by both Boston University and Holy Cross and spans all sports teams. Whichever team wins when the two teams meet gets 1 point towards the trophy, and the team with the most points at the end of the school year claims the title.

Boston University has a 6-3 lead of Holy Cross so far this season. The Men’s Basketball teams will meet once more in the season on Feb. 10. Scanlon of the Terriers won the MVP award for this Turnpike Trophy matchup.

 

The Terriers are first in the Patriot League and next face off at home against American University (4-13, 1-5) on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.

The Crusaders are tied for last in the Patriot League and next face off at home against Army (10-6, 3-2) on Jan. 17 at 7:05 p.m.
