With Monday having a full slate of games on MLK Day, I wanted to take a look at some of the other most intriguing matchups this week as we are close to the end of January and are gearing up toward the All-Star break in a few weeks.
Tonight, the Los Angeles Lakers will be traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on the Jazz in what should be an exciting matchup. Currently, the eight teams holding playoff spots in the West are separated by only 5.5 games and a win for either team could play a big role in the Western Conference playoff race. The Lakers and Jazz hold the 8th and 9th playoff spots in the conference and are only separated by two games.
The Los Angeles Lakers have been awful without LeBron James and Rajon Rondo. If that wasn’t bad enough; Kyle Kuzma has been out for the past two games as well. They were not able to win a game last week.
Christmas is a time for family togetherness because school and work are canceled as it’s given a federal holiday for everyone including non-celebrators. NBA games on Christmas have become a tradition even for non-NBA fans because it’s the one day where all the games are nationally televised on ABC, ESPN or TNT while also being easily accessible on online platforms. The NBA is smart to market this way because it attracts a large number of viewers as they also showcase new special Christmas Day jerseys for each team involved and let the players involved design special Christmas day sneakers with unique colorways.

Here are my thoughts on the Miami Heat’s 102-100 victory over the Utah Jazz:
After a couple months of incessant trade rumors surrounding Cleveland Cavaliers role players such as George Hill, J.R. Smith and Kyle Korver, they have finally made their first move, sending Korver to the Utah Jazz for what will be his second stint with the franchise. In return, Cleveland will reportedly be receiving eighth-year wing Alec Burks and a pair of second-round draft picks.
You know those moments that have happened throughout NBA history?
“Havlicek stole the ball!” Or the time when Magic Johnson, as a rookie, started at center in place of an injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – at that point, arguably the GOAT – in the NBA Finals and absolutely dominated, capped off by using Kareem’s signature skyhook. Michael Jordan on Fathers’ Day. MJ again, in 1998, hitting that shot, the shot that was supposed to be the last one of his career. LeBron James leading his hometown team back from down 3-1. Reggie Miller: eight points in nine seconds. There’s a level of perfection to all of those moments that makes them as memorable and legendary as they are.
Basketball fans: can you believe we are already into November? Worry not, the NBA season is only going to get better from here. Here is a list of some of the must-see games of this week and as always, enjoy the action.
Derrick Rose last night released more than just tears of joy after scoring a career-high 50 points in the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-125 victory over the Utah Jazz. This performance last night wasn’t vintage D Rose from his 2011 MVP season but it was vintage in his confidence and how he attacked the rim time after time after time.
