The Pacific Division is set to look very different after one of the biggest offseasons in NBA history completely shifted the league balance. The division went from one of the decent divisions in the NBA to the most competitive in a very quick period of time. Here’s an outlook at the division.
The Vegas Golden Knights had won three games in a row in resounding fashion, outscoring the San Jose Sharks 16-6. But the Golden Knights wasted a 3-1 series lead and squandered a 3-0, third-period advantage — conceding four goals in five minutes on their way to a (controversial but) severely disappointing overtime loss, ending Vegas’ sophomore year.
On December 4th, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the board of governors had voted and a 32nd team is going to be added to the NHL, with the team set to play in the 2021-2022 season in Seattle, WA. This has been a long time coming, as in 1974, the NHL announced that a Seattle group was awarded an expansion into the NHL along with a team from Denver. This franchise never came into fruition after the end of the minor pro-Western Hockey League (1952-1974), and lack of necessary funding to meet the deadline. A second attempt for a Seattle-based NHL team failed in 1990, once again coming down to financial demands.
The Vancouver Canucks team has been through a tough 4 years. After Henrik and Daniel Sedin retired at the end of the 2017-2018 season, Trevor Linden followed suit at the end of the 2018-2019 season, leaving as president of hockey operations, being replaced by Jim Benning. This is the third time in Canucks’ history they have failed to make the playoffs for four consecutive years. The team has never missed the playoffs for five years consecutively. But all is not dark in Vancouver.
The 2018-19 season was a disaster for the Los Angeles Kings. The team finished with the franchise’s worst record in over a decade and failed to rise above .500 even a single time this past season. The Kings’ finished second to last in goals scored on their way to the very bottom of the Western Conference.
They bite! They bite! (Cue the exhilarating theme song from Steven Speilberg’s Jaws films). Regardless of how you choose to associate with the San Jose Sharks, they remain one of the best-run organizations in not only the National Hockey League but in all of North America. This off-season, like so many others in recent history for this team, is embraced with high hopes, as their quest for Lord Stanley continues. The question begs…could this be the year for the boys in teal?

Like many other markets across the United States of America, the hockey team often plays second or even third-fiddle to their NFL, MLB, and NBA franchises. But as we inch closer to kick-starting another NHL season, few in the hockey world would argue that the “Yotes” have added some “pep in their step”.
The NBA trade deadline is just around the corner and the rumor machine is on fire. While most teams won’t make a deal, each will consider many options between now and the February 7th deadline.
