Just last weekend during the Kansas City series, Miguel Cabrera answered the press asking him about his lack of power so far this season. His answer? “Don’t worry about it.”
The MLB offseason was an interesting one due to free agency, meaning the lack thereof. Some veterans, expecting big pay-days, had to settle for less than expected and a smaller number of years, quite a few noticeable acquisitions only received one-year contracts. We’re over a month into the new season, and there are still players seeking employment, including Dallas Keuchel.
Sorry for missing the early part of the week for the Stream Machine. It sucks when you have a busy weekend and you plan out a part of it to write, only for mother nature to decide to try to throw her own curveball at you and send you to another person’s basement for the majority of said time to write. Rafael Devers graded by Fangraphs as the #2 prospect in the Red Sox farm system and #22 overall back in 2017. He was evaluated as a pure hitter with a plus-hit tool and strong raw power. Devers burst onto the scene as a 20-year old in 2017, slashing .284/.338/.482 with 10 HRs in only 58 games. This promising start led to higher expectations for the young slugger. He followed up his debut with a disappointing sophomore season, where he hit .240/.298/.433 with 21 HRs in 121 games. This performance caused his stock to drop in 2019 Fantasy Baseball drafts. However, the early stages of this season are showing promising signs for the young Devers.

Although fans and players criticized teams for making the hot stove barely lukewarm, every team made some sort of move in the off-season. Some were massive, some barely made a splash. Let’s look at how every team’s biggest acquisition fared after the first month of the season.
Once considered the unanimous top pitching prospect in baseball, Lucas Giolito entered 2019 off the fantasy radar. The lack of interest in Giolito was justified, as his career has been marred by injuries and disappointment. He finished 2018 with a lackluster 16.1 K%, 11.6 BB%, 6.13 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 5.46 xFIP, 5.37 SIERA, and 8.3 SwStr%. However, the Chicago White Sox are a rebuilding team and they allowed Giolito to pitch through his struggles. This decision appears to be paying dividends early on in 2019.

For those of you who haven’t heard the new agenda that Major League Baseball is pushing, “Let The Kids Play” implies that players are able to have fun while playing and be as flashy as they want. Now, before I get into the article, let me be clear that I love this agenda that the MLB is pushing. I just have an issue with the hypocrisy of the MLB front office as well as some of the players who pushed for this to be a thing.
