Pitching Showdown in Los Angeles

Levon Satamian | May 27th, 2019

What better way to end Memorial Day than to watch two of the best pitchers in baseball? Clayton Kershaw verse Jacob deGrom.

The Dodgers are coming off a sweep in Pittsburgh against the Pirates and looking to extend their winning streak, while the Mets are coming off a series win against the Detroit Tigers in New York. Both teams will look to stay hot, as their aces battle it out on the mound tonight.

Kershaw has looked sharp since returning from injury, with a record of 4-0, and an ERA of 3.33. Kershaw’s ERA should drop, as he gets to pitch in more games. On the other hand, deGrom has not pitched as well as last season. He has a record of 3-5 and an ERA of 3.72. Nonetheless, this is going to be a great matchup, with two former Cy Young Award winners battling it out at Dodger Stadium.

I expect the Dodgers to get a couple of home-runs tonight, specifically Joc Pederson. Other candidates would likely be, Justin Turner, Cody Bellinger, or Max Muncy. Dodger batters, with the exception of Corey Seager, have struggled against deGrom, but the Dodgers tend to play better at home, and especially when they come back home from a road trip, that’s the last team anyone would want to face.

These two pitchers faced off in the 2015 NLDS, and deGrom got the better of Kershaw in that game. Mets scored two runs in the seventh inning and went on to win that game 3-1. Both pitchers went on to pitch one more time in that series but not against each other. Kershaw won Game four of that series, and deGrom won Game five of the series, helping the Mets advance to the NLCS. So, you could say that there is a small rivalry between Kershaw and deGrom.

The Mets have a record of 26-26, while the Dodgers have a record of 35-18. I think the game either starts with a Pederson home-run in the bottom of the first inning, or they will go scoreless until the fourth or fifth inning, then the runs will come. The Dodgers will win this game, Kershaw will dominate at home, Pederson will get yet another home-run, in what should be an entertaining pitching matchup for all baseball fans to watch.
