MLB DFS: Studs and Scrubs for August 12, 2019

Joey Ricotta Aug 12th, 2019

Not much to be said today as far as an intro goes. The title speaks for itself. I’ll be taking a studs and scrubs approach tonight, especially when it comes to pitching. There aren’t a whole lot of options to like. So, why not pay all the way down?

Pitching

Zack Greinke ($10,700 on DK and $10,800 on FD)

Greinke gets a soft match-up versus the Chicago White Sox. The Sox have remained a team we can use opposing pitchers against. They strike out a ton (26.6%) and provide a safe floor for cash games. Greinke’s first outing with his new team didn’t go exactly the way he wanted, giving up five runs in six innings pitched. However, he was able to pick up the victory. He’ll look to make a better impression tonight and I expect him to.

Austin Pruitt ($4,000 on DK and $5,500 on FD)

Pruitt is not someone I have a whole lot of confidence in, but he’s in a decent spot and dirt cheap. Looking to pair someone with Greinke tonight is very ugly, but on two pitcher sites, we have no choice. The good thing is, we aren’t the only ones who will have this problem. Looking at the positives, the San Diego Padres strikeout the second-highest rate in all of baseball at 26.2% versus right-handed pitchers. They also have the highest soft contact rate against them at 19.3%. Don’t look at his name or numbers too long, they will make you change your mind. This is my gut call. I’ll be plugging him in and paying for hitters tonight.

Infield

Gleyber Torres ($4,400 on DK and $3,800 on FD)

Torres is becoming known as the Baltimore Orioles killer. He smacked a solo shot in game one of the doubleheader today, and now has 14 home runs versus the Orioles, eight more against them than any other opponent. Going up against a shaky starter, to say the least, Ty Blach, I expect Torres to keep tormenting the Orioles tonight.

Outfield

Aaron Judge ($4,400 on DK and $4,000 on FD)

Judge didn’t play in game one of the doubleheader today. The Yankees picked a perfect spot to give him a little breather, as they won the game 8-5. Judge hasn’t really been tearing the cover off the ball lately, but I think this is a good spot for him to do just that. Like Gleyber Torres, Judge will be facing Ty Blach. Judge has hit .328 with a 173 wRC+ and .432 wOBA against lefties this season.

Stacks

Coors Field

The only time I won’t have at least one stack involving players from both teams playing here, is when there is at least one elite pitcher on the mound. We don’t have that tonight. Merrill Kelly has a 4.52 ERA and Peter Lambert has a 6.87 ERA. I like the Arizona Diamondbacks offense a little bit more, but they should be higher owned.

New York Yankees vs Ty Blach

The entire Yankees lineup will be in play tonight. Ty Blach hasn’t pitched much in the majors this season and probably shouldn’t be. Pitching in 17 games with the San Francisco Giants Triple-A affiliate, Blach had a 5.93 ERA and 5.43 xFIP this season. In 6.1 innings pitched with Baltimore, Blach has a 14.21 ERA and has allowed 62.1% hard contact.

Texas Rangers vs Neil Ramirez and Brock Stewart

Neil Ramirez is listed as the expected opener for the Toronto Blue Jays and Brock Stewart is expected to be the long reliever. Although the game will be played at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, the Rangers should be able to put up some runs in this one. In 16 games pitched, Neil Ramirez has a 5.40 ERA and a disgusting 1.62 WHIP. Stewart hasn’t been much better with an ERA of 9.00 in limited action. Before being placed on waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Stewart went 5-7 with a 7.34 ERA in 17 games pitched at the Triple-A level this season.
