MLB DFS Diamond Picks: August 19

The MLB season is trucking along just fine, every day it feels like more and more that the season will be played out in its entirety. Making it even more promising is the fact that bubbles may be incorporated once the playoffs commence. This, in turn, means we can continue to break down the action. As per usual plenty of games on the docket tonight, no time like the present to carve out some gems. Let’s get right to it and make some Diamond Picks.

PITCHER

Jacob deGrom(NYM)

Gerrit Cole is going to be highly owned. A matchup versus the upstart Tampa Bay Rays gives me some pause, as they have won nine of their last 10 games. A nice pivot off of the Cole-train is another premiere pitcher, Jacob deGrom. The Mets will be facing off against the Miami Marlins, who are 3-7 in their last 10 and have scored just eight runs in their previous four games. Over the course of his last five starts (one this season, four last year) deGrom is a tidy 4-1 (3.41 ERA) with 30 strikeouts in 29 innings.

Aaron Civale(CLE)

Civale has plenty of appeal as an SP2 tonight, thanks in large part to an abysmal Pirates lineup hitting just .211 as a group. Cleveland’s right-hander has struck out 26 batters in 25 innings and has pitched to a very respectable 3.60 ERA. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh owns the 12th-highest K-rate in all of baseball at 23.9 percent.

INFIELD

Corey Seager(LAD)

Heading into Tuesday’s action, the Dodgers have scored a jaw-dropping 49 runs over their last six games. Right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker is set to take the bump for Seattle and has looked decent this year, pitching equally well against the Dodgers––going 2-0 with a 3.80 ERA in his last five starts. The Dodgers have such a dominant offense, if they don’t get to Walker, they are likely to touch up the Mariners bullpen. Seager has been a consistent force for Dodger blue. Heading into Tuesday, he has hit three homers, two doubles, and driven in 10 runs over 10 games this month.

Seager also has a career .308 average and a .900 OPS when matched up against right-handed pitching.

Jose Ramirez(CLE)

Cleveland appears to be turning a corner in terms of their offense. The Tribe scored 21 runs in their weekend-series sweep over the Detroit Tigers. Left-hander Steven Brault gets the nod for the Pirates. Ramirez has touched up lefties to the tune of a .412 average with three homers and a pair of doubles in 17 at-bats this season. Overall, Ramirez went into Tuesday’s play hitting .277 with five bombs, six extra-base hits, and 18 RBI in 22 games.

Outfield

Marcell Ozuna(ATL)

The Braves will look to tee off on right-hander Erick Fedde and Washington’s middle-of-the-pack bullpen (16th rank, 4.39 ERA). Ozuna has been a very nice source of consistency since moving over from the Cardinals. In 24 games this year, Ozuna has a .362 wOBA and leads the Braves in homers (five) going into last night’s action.

Domingo Santana(CLE)

Santana is somewhat of a dart throw as he has struggled out of the gate, posting a .163 average in 49 at-bats. He has gone deep twice, however, in 10 career at-bats against Steven Brault.

*Take a good look at the Angels host of outfielders as they get the San Francisco Giants. The Giants are reeling and have given up 42 runs spanned over five straight losses before Tuesday night.
