With the 2021 NFL Draft over and the schedule officially being released, it’s time for my third annual 32 part series where the top three questions will be posed for each NFL team. Here are those three questions for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Be sure to check out all of Heller’s Three Burning Questions.

Will Justin Herbert Suffer a Sophomore Slump?

Herbert was expected to be the quarterback of the future when he was selected sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. That future came much earlier than the Chargers or Herbert himself expected. After a mishap by the team’s medical staff, the Week 1 starter Tyrod Taylor, Herbert was under center in Week 2. He would not relinquish the starting job the rest of the season.

Although he only posted a record of 6-9 as the signal-caller, he had his team in every game with a chance to win late. He threw for over 4,300 yards and 31 touchdowns in his debut season. He also added over 200 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. He was named Offensive Rookie of the Year.

The team and their fans have reason to expect big things in year two, from Herbert. To ensure that the Chargers revamped their offensive line to protect their quarterback, including former Green Bay Packers center Corey Linsley.

Can the Defense stay Healthy?

When healthy, this defense is among the top 10 in the league. Defensive back Casey Hayward is now in Las Vegas, and Melvin Ingram is still on the free agent market. But they still have Joey Bosa and Linval Joseph upfront to get to the opposing quarterback. The secondary is the biggest area of concern. The unit battled injuries last season, which led to shotty play, which is expected when they contend with the likes of Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and the young big-play threats in Las Vegas and Denver. Derwin James and Chris Harris are expected to lead the secondary both on the field and on the sidelines.

Do they have Enough at Wide Receiver?

When you have a playmaking wide receiver in  Keenan Allen, who is a four-time Pro Bowl selection, paired with Mike Williams, who is also a playmaker, you have to feel pretty comfortable at the position. The latest rumors have the Chargers as one of the potential landing spots for disgruntled Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones. Adding him to this duo would make them one of the top receiving corps in the NFL, which will be a dream come true for their second-year quarterback.
