Heller Answers His 3 Burning Questions: Atlanta Falcons

Helleranswers his 3 burning questions: Atlanta Falcons

Prior to the 2020 NFL season, three questions were posed for each of the 32 teams. This is the recap and answers to those questions for the Atlanta Falcons

What version of Matt Ryan will this season bring?

He passed for over 4,500 yards and 26 touchdowns.  On the surface, it would seem like a solid season for a quarterback. But for Matt Ryan and the Falcons, those stats translated into a 4-12 record. It also saw Dan Quinn relieved of his duties in October after an 0-5 start to the season.

What can Atlanta expect to get from Gurley?

Todd Gurley only tallied 678 yards and accounted for nine touchdowns on the season. His carries and yardage suffered because his team was playing from behind in just about every game.

Unfortunately, Gurley’s first season in Atlanta was known more for a “mistake” than anything else. In a game against the Detroit Lions, he scored a touchdown, instead of giving himself up so his team could take a few knees and get the win. Scoring left time on the clock and the Lions went on to win that game.

Is Julio Jones still a tier-one wide receiver?

A nagging hamstring injury limited Jones all season, much to the dismay of at least one fantasy owner that thought he was a steal in the third round. Jones only started nine games in 2020, and in most of those games, he was only able to play sporadically.

Jones’ season totals were 51 catches for 771 yards and three touchdowns. Which, in essentially half a season on a bum hamstring are still rather impressive. Proving Jones is still among the top players at his position, when healthy.

Calvin Ridley benefited from Jones being sidelined. Ridley in his third season 90 receptions for 1,374 yards and nine touchdowns.

With a new head coach, if the team decides to keep Ryan and Jones and not make them salary cap casualties, although both are getting older, they still are a viable duo in the NFL.
