Dr. Sullivan’s NFL Week 7 Medical Report

Dr. Sullivan's NFL Week 7 Medical Report

Week 7 had a couple of notable injuries including a couple of season-ending ones. It was also a bad week for running backs as there are three of them on our injury report this week.

Landon Collins, S, Washington Football Team

Collins ruptured his Achilles Tendon in the Washington Football Team’s Week 7 game against the Dallas Cowboys. He had an MRI that confirmed the extent of the injury and is scheduled to have a surgical repair next Monday. The average recovery time for this type of injury is 11 months so he will most likely miss all of the offseason work leading up to 2021. For more information on the Achilles injury and the recovery process check out my previous article here.

Odell Beckham, Jr., WR, Cleveland Brown

Beckham’s 2020 campaign is over. He will undergo surgery to repair his ACL and then will face six to nine months of rehab before he will be ready to return to the field. With that type of timeline, he will miss a lot of the offseason prep leading up to the 2021 NFL season. If you are interested in what is ahead for him check out my article on ACL injuries.

Kenyan Drake, RB, Arizona Cardinals

Drake suffered a Grade II high ankle sprain and will miss a significant amount of time. The normal recovery time for a Grade II high ankle sprain is 8-12 weeks. This provides sufficient time for complete healing and a return to participation. Returning earlier than this can actually be detrimental because of the risk of further injury due to ankle instability. Persistent pain or swelling after the initial rehabilitative period may require more aggressive treatment. Whether he is able to return this season will probably depend on how far the Cardinals get to go.

Chris Carson, RB, Seattle Seahawks

Carson suffered a midfoot sprain otherwise known as a Lisfranc injury. He is being listed as week to week by the Seahawks, however, I think he will be out longer than a week or two. NFL players with Lisfranc injuries treated without surgery missed an average of 6.2 months and seven games. Players who underwent surgery due to severe joint instability missed an average of 11.6 months and 10 games. I will do an in-depth article on this injury soon.

Jeff Wilson, RB, San Francisco 49ers

Wilson suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 7. He was placed on IR

and will miss at least three weeks because of this. Since they placed him on IR I suspect at least a Grade II ankle sprain and like I explained with Drake the average recovery time is 8-12 weeks.

Breshad Perriman, WR, New York Jets and Andy Dalton, QB, Dallas Cowboys

Perriman returned in Week 7 after missing three games from an ankle injury only to sustain a concussion in the Jets game against Buffalo. Dalton was injured after a vicious hit by Washington linebacker Jon Bostic.

Both Perriman and Dalton are in the NFL concussion protocol and until they are cleared by the independent neurologist. I cover the concussion protocol here if you want to read more about it.
