Bryce Harper is one of the most over-scrutinized players in baseball. Let’s stop the outrageous notion that Harper “sucks. Harper has not been off to a great start in 2019 but he’s been quite unlucky this season too.
Harper has a line of .247/.356/.476, .832 OPS, .348 wOBA, 116 wRC+, .229 ISO, 11 HRs , 43 RBIs, and 1.8 WAR. He has a 45.6 Hard Hit%, 40.9 Med Hit% and a 13.4 Soft Hit%. His hard hit% has been at the best mark of his career, improving his best from last season at a 42.3 Hard Hit%. He has a 23.8 LD%, 38.1 GB%, and 38.1 FB%. His 23.8 LD% is the best of his career and 38.1 GB% is the lowest of career.
This season Harper has seen 1,108 pitches, he has 149 batted balls and 20 barrels. He has an Exit Velocity of 91.9 MPH which is the best mark of his career. Harper also has 69 balls in which he has hit 95 mph or harder. The .250 Avg is not where he should be he has an xBA (expected BA) of .265 and a .326 BABIP (BA on balls in play).
Harper doesn’t see pitches in the zone quite often as he sees 38.6% of balls in the zone which is the 16th lowest% in all of MLB. He has a 67.2 Contact%, 79% Z-Contact%, and 76.6% Z-Swing%. His contact% and Z-Contact% are at the lowest mark of his career in 2019. It’s quite impressive with his lowest contact% of his career he’s hitting the ball the hardest of his careers.
The Phillies superstar is only going to improve as the season goes on. He is excelling at hitting the ball hard this season despite his low contact%. Batting average isn’t everything he’s been quite unlucky this season. Phillies fans get excited, a Harper breakout is coming and I believe we have yet to see the best of Harper. Harper is a generational talent, he’s only 26 entering the prime years of his career, and will be a pitchers nightmare for many years to come.
