Could the Chicago Bulls Hire a New Coach?

The Chicago Bulls weren’t invited to take part in the 22-team resumption of the NBA season, ending their season and posing them with a big question regarding their future:  will Jim Boylen remain the head coach?

The Bulls have time to make that decision as the 2020-21 season won’t start until December. Bulls Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, Arturas Karnisovas, hasn’t met Boylen yet and wants to do so before making a decision.

“I haven’t met face-to-face yet,” Karnisovas said. “There haven’t been any practices. There haven’t been any games since I became a part of this organization. I really take pride in my relationships that I cultivate with coaching staffs, my basketball operations staffs. I haven’t seen them. I’m looking forward to it.”

Karnisovas added, “I know that you are anxious for me to comment definitively on our future of the Chicago Bulls. I understand that anticipation. That said, I take pride in being deliberate and thoughtful in my decision-making and take the weight of my decisions seriously. I’m not inclined to make evaluations prematurely to satisfy our excitement to move this team forward.”

Boylen has a 39-84 record with the Bulls in almost two years. The Bulls haven’t made the playoffs in four of the last five seasons. Chicago was 22-43 and in 11th in the Eastern Conference when the season was put on hold due to the coronavirus.

Karnisovas and new general manager Marc Eversley have gotten mixed feedback from players and other personnel on Boylen. The worst part about not playing when the season resumes is they won’t see Boylen in action. That means they have to make a decision on Boylen without seeing him in action.

Philadelphia 76ers assistant Ime Udoka is the front-runner for being the Bulls new coach, according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. Toronto Raptors assistant and former Bulls assistant Adrian Griffin is also in the mix.

Getting a new coach wouldn’t be a bad thing for the Bulls. Things can’t get much worse than they are now.
