Baker Mayfield isn’t the Answer for the Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are in a rebuild state and have needed to go in this direction for a while. With Russell Wilison now with the Denver Broncos, it’s time for the Seahawks to get rid of the old guard and rebuild. However, there is two primary way the team can go these next few years, and only one is beneficial. While the Seahawks have been linked to Baker Mayfield these last few weeks, it is terrible. The team is in a great spot to rebuild and have a very high pick in next year’s draft, and getting Mayfield could hinder that. Furthermore, with Drew Lock as the clear starter, it would be wise for the team to stick with him and get a higher draft pick next year.

Baker isn’t the Answer

With the Seahawks in rebuild mode, the team is in a prime position to land a top quarterback in next year’s draft. However, the team won’t be good next year with Lock as the starter and can walk into a top-five pick. After Bobby Wagner left to join the Los Angeles Rams this season the team is void of its old guard. With Wagner being the last of the Super Bowl-winning team, it’s now on to a new direction. However, with rumors of Mayfield likely to be traded to the Seahawks, it could be a mistake for the organization. Mayfield is an average quarterback and is in the same category as Kirk Cousins and Dak Prescott. With Mayfield’s money, it would be almost impossible for them to win a Super Bowl.

While Mayfield is a better player than Lock is, it’s not enough of an upgrade to justify the trade. However, it would be a trade that the organization makes to be competitive this next season. In contrast, being in the NFC West is a challenge in itself. It’s a very challenging division with the reigning champs Los Angeles Rams, the always tough San Francisco 49ers, and the young and upcoming Arizona Cardinals. In addition, the Seahawks need a stud at the quarterback position. Lock and Mayfield just can’t be that, but hopefully, a prospect in next year’s draft can.

The 2023 NFL Draft

The Seahawks need to look here with C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young headlining the quarterback position in the 2023 class. At the same time, no one knows how a prospect will pan out. It is better to take the unknown over the known. With the hope to win a Super Bowl and win the Division, it’s a known fact that neither Mayfield nor Lock can accomplish this. However, Mayfield won the AFC North once but it isn’t the same as the tough NFC West. With the unknown quality of Stroud and Young, hopefully, one of these players can change the franchise’s future.
