In the biggest Premier League match of the weekend, Arsenal hosted bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby.
It was a game fueled by hatred and passion as Arsenal came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in Sunday’s affair.
Though the Gunners dominated the early moments of the game, it would be the Spurs to grab the first goal in the 10th minute. Son Heung-min controlled the ball down and played Erik Lamela through on goal. Lamela took a low shot that Bernd Leno poorly dealt with, pushing the ball into the feet of Christian Eriksen to tap home.
Leno would make up for his error moments later, as Son made space to curl a ball to the top corner, but Leno’s acrobatic effort kept the one goal difference.
The Gunners conceded their second penalty in two games in the 40th minute, as Granit Xhaka’s poor decision making led to a terrible sliding challenge in the box. Harry Kane buried the shot into the bottom left corner with ease, giving the Spurs a 2-0 lead.
A magnificent effort from Alexandre Lacazette would pull Arsenal back in the dying minutes of the first half, as he collected a driven cross from Nicolas Pepe with a superb touch, then taking two perfect touches to create space and rifle the ball past Hugo Lloris.
Arsenal came out firing in the second half, but Lloris would not be beaten as the Gunners continued bombarding his goal.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be the goalscorer to secure the draw, as Matteo Guendouzi played a wonderful ball into the oncoming run of Aubameyang who’s touch directed it to the back of the net.
Chances were traded from both sides, as the intensity and rivalry heated up. But neither side could capitalize and the match ended in a draw.
The Gunners will be disappointed to have given away such sloppy goals, but they will head into the international break with their heads held high after fighting back for the draw.
Unai Emery’s side plays again on Sunday, September 15 at Vicarage Road against Watford F.C.
