Activision Officially Announces Call of Duty eSports Branding

Activision Blizzard officially launched the Call of Duty League along with information on the number of teams, prize pool, and which platform the League will be played on.

Call of Duty is moving to a city-based franchised system for the first time in 2020. There will be 12 teams, and unlike earlier speculations, the teams will not host home and away matches. Teams will travel together to each of the twelve locations and compete.

With the announcement came a few more details, including the official platform and prize pool information. The league will be played exclusively on the Playstation 4, while the prize pool will consist of $6 million and the Call of Duty League World Championship.

While it was reported that teams spent an upwards of $25 million to secure their spot in the league, a $6 million prize pool isn’t unreasonable, as teams will have the best chance at recovering costs through exclusive partnerships and branding.

Some unintended news that came of the announcement was found within the website‘s coding. It looks as if all of the 12 team names have been discovered, and posted by a few keen-eyed individuals on Twitter. Although nothing has been confirmed or is final, these are the speculated team names; Seattle Surge, Chicago Hunstman, FaZe Atlanta, Minnesota Rokkr, Dallas Empire, Los Angeles Guerrillas, Paris Legion, London Royal Ravens, Los Angeles OpTic, Florida Mutineers, New York Subliners, and the Toronto Ultra.

Activision has yet to announce a start date for the new league, but it is expected that it will kick off in the first quarter of 2020.
