Josh Donaldson Signs With the Minnesota Twins

John Lepore | January 14th, 2020

Josh Donaldson has signed with the Minnesota Twins for four years at $92 million with a fifth-year option. The former MVP had a bounce-back season with the Atlanta Braves on a one-year prove-it deal worth $23 million. Let’s take a look at what his new squad is getting.

Josh Donaldson went into 2019 having come off an injury-plagued 2018 which saw him play just 52 games between the Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Indians. He finished his playoff run with the Indians going 1-11 in the ALDS and just like that, he was a 32-year-old free agent. This looked bleak. The Braves came calling and Donaldson took the pillow deal, betting on himself. It certainly worked. He proved that 2018 was an outlier and got back to bringing the rain with a .900 OPS, 37 HRs, and eclipsing 90 runs, 90 RBI, and even 100 walks.

He also brought his glove to SunTrust Park to the tune of a 15 DRS. The defensive side of the ball has never been an issue for Donaldson. Amazingly, he has never won a Gold Glove despite a 10.8 DRS/150 at the hot corner. The former catcher from Auburn University has settled in nicely at third after being drafted 48th overall by the Chicago Cubs in 2007.

The Minnesota Twins get a 34-year-old who has more than proven himself worth the money. Both in the field and at bat, Josh Donaldson continues to bring the rain as he has for six of the last seven years. Now he’ll be doing it representing the Twins.
