Veteran striker Harry Kane left the pitch injured on Wednesday during Tottenham’s New Year’s Day game against Southampton. Kane had to leave the match in the 74th minute as the Spurs went on to lose 1-0. Jose Mourhino was worried after the match that he may be without his star striker for some time, and sadly Mourhino was right. Kane suffered a tear in his left hamstring and will be out for an undisclosed amount of the time as Tottenham’s medical staff will keep an eye on him throughout the next few weeks.
The English star is described as “irreplaceable” by manager Mourhino, during the press conference Mourhino was asked about the depth of Tottenham and if they will be able to overcome this tragic incident, Mourhino did not seem optimistic as he responded:
“If you think about one player by one player, I think he’s irreplaceable. But we have to try solutions with the players we have. I come to work with the players that are available and I’m not thinking about the market.”
Kane is essential to Tottenham’s squad who may suffer through his absence. Currently, in sixth place, the Spurs are just outside a cup qualifying position in the Premier League. One point behind Manchester United for fifth place and a spot in next year’s Europa League and six points behind Chelsea for a Champions League spot, Tottenham is at risk to miss the top five which they have only done once this decade, even worse they may fall worse than sixth with four clubs within three points behind them. Depending on the length of the injury Tottenham may have to play at the least the first leg of their Champions League matchup against RB Leipzig on February 19th without their star striker as well.
Tottenham does not have too many options in replacing their star striker. Their best options at moving into Kane’s position are Lucas Moura or Son Heung-min who just came off his ban. The two combined for nine goals and eight assists on the season, the nine goals is two less than what Kane has produced for the Spurs so far. Another option for the club is deploying 17-year-old Troy Parrott, Parrott has only appeared in one match for the main club this season, and probably will not be the main replacement for Kane during his absence as Mourhino seems to think it is too soon to use the young player regularly.
Tottenham’s next Premier League matchup will be Saturday, January 11th against league leader Liverpool. We will see then a glimpse of what Mourhino decides to do without his star striker.
