The Los Angeles Rams made it a point to retool this offseason in hopes of returning to the Super Bowl. One of the major pickups for last year’s NFC Champions was former Baltimore Ravens safety Eric Weddle. Especially when his peers go on to vote him as one of the Top 100 players in the NFL.
Weddle is an 11-year veteran in the NFL with much standing among other players. His general understanding of the game is what amazes most players at this stage in his career. His new teammate tight end Gerald Everett was taken aback by Weddle’s defensive IQ.
Everett had much to say about the two-time All-Pro safety during an interview per the theramswire.usatoday.com.
“He’s almost like having a McVay on defense,” Everett said. “I know for sure I won’t see guys like that on most game days, at least. He’s switching up his looks and giving me the best look I could possibly see and just letting me work around it.”
While Weddle is no longer in the prime of his career, he still has one of the best minds in the game. Head coach Sean McVay raved about Weddle’s impact on the game as well.
“He really understands what it is the quarterback is looking for and then how can I play that cat and mouse game with him to try to really throw off his ability to be decisive and make good decisions throughout the course of a game.
He will be a welcome addition to a Rams secondary that features John Johnson III, Marcus Peters, and Aqib Talib. A secondary whose performance was average at best last year. Considering the injuries they suffered and the addition of Weddle, it should perform better this year.
Weddle’s standing among players is admirable. Particularly when other players’ agents speak well of him. Both parties are hoping his time with the Rams will include a Super Bowl ring.
Everyone’s common goal going into the season.
