MLB Draft Preview: Matthew Allan

Givanni Damico | June 1st, 2019

Matthew Allan, RHP (Seminole High School in Florida)

Height: 6’3”
Weight: 210 lbs
Age: 18
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
MLB Pipeline Grades – Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 60 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 55 | Overall: 55

Matthew Allan is a right-handed starting pitcher who attends Seminole High School in Florida. He has a strong build with room to fill out more. He pitches with a relatively slow delivery and a large leg raise. His pitching mechanics come naturally to him, requiring little effort. He pitches with more control from the windup as opposed to the stretch. His fastball is accurate and tops out at 97 miles per hour. As he continues to mature physically, he will probably be able to dial his fastball up to 98-99. He was selected to play in the 2018 Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Strengths:
Like most pitchers, Allan has the best control over his fastball. He can dial his fastball up to about 97 and throw it for strikes. You can imagine as a high school hitter that 97 wouldn’t be very fun to face. One of the most impressive aspects of Allan’s game is his stamina. He maintains his high velocity late into games which is crucial to pitch at the next level. His power curveball is the complement to his fastball. He is able to throw this pitch for strikes and get batters to whiff on it. His changeup is an above-average pitch which induces strikeouts as well.

Weaknesses:
Like many young guys who throw hard, Allan lacks control at times. He manages to properly locate his fastball most of the time, but his breaking pitchers are hung at times. His changeup needs the most work out of his pitches as it isn’t quite as deceptive as it should be.

Overview:
Matthew Allan has great arm action and throws his fastball for strikes. His velocity is hard for high school hitters to touch and should still project very well at the next level. His curveball is nasty and the hook will generate plenty of swings-and-misses. His changeup is a work-in-progress but is developing into a great tertiary pitch. It wouldn’t hurt if he developed a fourth pitch (maybe a slider), but his arsenal is solid as is. High school pitchers are very hard to project to the MLB as to how their abilities will translate, but Allan definitely has the talent to develop into a front-end starter.

Draft Prediction: Round 1, Pick 13 to the Minnesota Twins
The Twins’ farm system lacks stellar starting pitching prospects for the future. Allan would leapfrog many prospects in the Twins’ top-30 and become a top-three prospect in that organization. It will likely take a few years before he is ready to face MLB competition, but he definitely has ace potential and would fit in well with Minnesota.
