Dodgers Receive Suspensions Following Astros Incident

Major League Baseball handed out punishments to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday after an incident with the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly threw a pitch near the head of Alex Bregman and later taunted Carlos Correa. Those actions led to both benches being cleared.

Kelly has been suspended for eight games and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was suspended for one game. Astros manager Dusty Baker was fined. MLB said in a statement that Kelly had previously been suspended for “intentional throwing.”

MLB wasn’t happy that the incident happened.

“They were not pleased,’’ Roberts told Bob Nightengale of USA Today. “Baseball is under a microscope right now. But as coaches, myself included, I have to do a better job of guys staying on the bench.  When tempers flared, I tried to get out there and keep it at bay, and minimize it, but I’ve got to make sure guys stay on the bench and follow protocols.’’

Kelly is appealing his suspension. Roberts will serve his suspension Wednesday night. Bench coach Bob Geren will be the interim manager.
