NFL Draft Recap: Picks 49-52

The second round of the draft is underway and continued with picks Nos. 49 through 52.

The Pittsburgh Steelers used the 49th pick, which was their first pick of the second round on Chase Claypool, a wide receiver from Notre Dame. In 2019 the senior became a household name as he was the team’s leading receiver with 66 receptions for 1,037 yards. He averaged 15.3 yards a catch and had 13 touchdowns, which ranked him top ten nationally.

Claypool adds size to the Steelers receiving core. Although he struggles to separate, the Notre Dame product can be aggressive downfield.

With the 50th pick, the Bears selected Jaylon Johnson, an aggressive cornerback out of Utah. Johnson makes plays drifting to different zones and is great at mirroring down the field.

The Utah product is over-aggressive at times but has calm and rapid footwork. Johnson was a Second-Team All-American in 2019 and had seven interceptions in his three years at Utah.

He joins a dangerous defensive that also includes Khalil Mack.

At No. 51, the Dallas Cowboys, selected Trevon Diggs, a cornerback from Alabama. The newest Cowboy is the brother of Steffon Diggs and appeared in 12 games this year after breaking his foot midway through the 2018 season.

In Diggs’s final season at Alabama, he was an All-American and tied for the team-lead in pass breakups with eight. He also recorded 37 tackles and had two fumble recoveries including a 100- yard score.

Seconds later, at no. 52 overall, the Los Angeles Rams, selected Cam Akers, a running back out of Florida State. In three years with the Seminoles, Akers rushed for 2,875 yards. With the departure of Todd Gurley, Akers is expected to play a big role in the Rams offense.

The Rams’ newest running back has an above-average field vision and looks to run through the tackler’s pads. He will need to improve his ball security and is an elusive back.
