Mookie Betts couldn’t have scripted a better afternoon Sunday.
The Red Sox leadoff hitter collected four hits, two of which left the yard, scored three runs and drove in eight to power Boston to an 15-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.
Betts’ first hit came in the top of the second inning when he took an 87 MPH Joe Biagini changeup that skipped in front of Blue Jays left fielder Steve Pierce to drive in Tzu-Wei Lin to put his club up 2-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, down 0-1 on a called strike, Betts 92.7 MPH fastball off the arm of Biagini, scoring Lin and Deven Marrero and putting Boston up 5-1.
Two innings thereafter, Biagni left a fastball over the inside of the plate, which Betts launched over the left-field wall, pushing across Marrero, to make it 7-1.
The 24-year-old capped off his stellar game in the top of the seventh with a sharp line-drive single to center field that plated Christian Vazquez and Marrero and put Boston ahead 11-1.
The damage can after Betts struck out looking at a pitch right down the middle in the opening frame.
He joined Nomar Garciapara as the only Red Sox player to have two games in which they’ve driven in eight runs. Betts collected eight RBIs against the Arizona Diamondbacks Aug. 14, 2016.
This comes on the heels of the two-time All-Star walked three times Saturday and scores three runs in a 7-1 Boston win.
Betts now has 15 home runs and 51 runs batted in to go with a .286 average.
