Washington: Dez Bryant Should Consider a Position Change

It’s no secret that Dez Bryant is holding out for another NFL opportunity, but being 31 years old and two years removed from his last NFL snap, the chances of the longtime Cowboy getting another opportunity at wideout looks bleak.

Here’s an alternative for the Oklahoma St. product: He should transition to tight end immediately.

Just imagine a two tight end set with Bryant and Blake Jarwin with Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup lined up on the outside with Ezekiel Elliott in the backfield. Oh boy, this offense would be unstoppable and there’s not a defense in the league that could stop any one of these players. The offensive scheme will be so unpredictable, that teams would give up by the end of the first quarter.

Nothing is official yet if Jason Witten intends to return for one more year and it seems more likely than not since this much time has passed by. I think Witten and Bryant would take a very team-friendly deal to earn a roster spot for the next season.

New coach Mike McCarthy has been busy assembling a “super” staff, and once that’s complete he will complete his “super” 53-man roster and it could start by signing Bryant as a tight end.

Bryant standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 218 pounds, this transition is a no-brainer for both, Bryant and the Cowboys. Bryant still leads the franchise record with 73 receiving touchdowns and that number would increase significantly in the red-zone with all the weapons the Cowboys have on the roster. He had 531 receptions for 7,459 yards playing for the Cowboys.

It only makes sense because Bryant has never been known for his great route running skills and his routes fit the tight end routes to a “T.” There’s not a doubt in anyone’s mind about how well he could block. His strength and quickness would only help his cause. Another factor is Bryant knows how to read the defenses, so it would be easy for him to pick up the blitz and double coverage.

This would be an exciting opportunity and would create a buzz in every stadium they play in next season. Bryant is destined to play again, and he needs to play with a star on his helmet and return as a starting tight end for the Dallas Cowboys immediately.

Bryant was not a fan of former head coach Jason Garrett. After news broke out that Garrett would not be returning, Bryant stated, “I don’t have no sympathy for coach Garrett losing his job.” He wouldn’t delve into any specific dirt that happened behind-the-scenes. However, Garrett and Bryant have one thing in common, they are currently both looking for work in the NFL.

The Cowboys have hired former Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy, and Bryant approves of this move. He said, “the Cowboys just became real contenders.” This may have been his first pitch to the new coach that he would like to return to “America’s team.”

How can Cowboy fans get Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy’s attention and pitch the idea to bring Bryant back to the Cowboys but not as a wide receiver, but as a dominating tight-end?
