The Tennessee Titans traveled to Charlotte, N.C., on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019, to face the Carolina Panthers in the Bank of America Stadium in Week 9 of the 2019 NFL season. The Titans led the all-time series 4-2, and Tennessee’s record coming into this week was 4-4. The Panthers came into this week 4-3 following a blowout loss to the 49ers last week.
The game was loaded with missed opportunities on both sides of the field, including sacks, fumbles, and interceptions, but mostly in Tennessee’s case, missed field goal attempts. Ryan Succop’s first 43-yard field goal attempt went wide left, his 56-yard field goal attempt at the end of the half was short, and his third attempt at the end of the game hit the goalpost.
The Panthers’ rookie kicker, Joey Slye, put the first points on the board when he kicked a 35-yard field goal to give the Panthers the 3-0 lead early in the second quarter, and Donte Jackson intercepted a pass intended for A.J. Brown. Carolina capitalized on the interception when Allen threw a pass to Christian McCaffrey for the seven-yard touchdown, and the Panthers had a ten-point lead 10-0 with just under half the quarter played.

With less than a minute to play, Carolina scored another touchdown when Allen connected with Curtis Samuel for a 12-yard touchdown. The Panthers led at halftime, 17-0. Carolina led Tennessee all the way down the line in the game matchup, except for yards per play, turnovers, and penalties. The Panthers doubled the Titans’ total plays and recorded 202 yards versus the Titans’ 114 yards.
The Titans put their first points of the game up in the first drive of the second half, but Carolina answered for a touchdown of their own on the next drive when McCaffrey rushed the ball for the one-yard score. After each team’s first possession, the score was 24-7 with Carolina still on top.
Tennessee also put the first points of the fourth quarter on the board when Tannehill connected with Derrick Henry for a 23-yard rushing touchdown closing the Carolina lead to only ten points, 24-14 within the first minute of the quarter.
The Panthers didn’t let this touchdown go unanswered, however, as McCaffrey again rushed the ball for the touchdown on the next drive, this time for 58 yards and six points Tre Boston took the ball away from the Titans in the next possession, but Slye went wide left in his 49-yard field goal attempt, so the Panthers didn’t capitalize on the interception.
Tennessee came back with 2:49 left in the game to close the lead by ten points when Tannehill rushed the ball for a 10-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful. This would end the game. Missed field goal attempts definitely could have changed the outcome of this game, or at least the gap in the score. In the end, both sides of the ball on the Panthers side did what they were supposed to, the defense was strong even without Mario Addison, and the offense came back this week to produce the points needed to get the win at home.
The Panthers will face the Packers next week and the Titans will take on the Chiefs.
