The New York Jets travel to Jacksonville this Sunday for a contest with the Jaguars.
The Jets, after their blowout loss to the Patriots, come into this game battered and bruised with nothing to lose. After disputes with left guard Kelechi Osemele, head coach Adam Gase has been put on the hot seat by the New York media.
On the contrary, the Jaguars are 3-4 in a wide-open division. That makes this matchup a must-win for the Jaguars, basically saying that if they can not beat the Jets, they can not beat anyone, or at least not anyone worthwhile.
The aforementioned Osemele is out for the rest of this year after planning to receive shoulder surgery. C.J. Mosley is also out, as he has reinjured his groin. While Chris Herdon has made progress on his hamstring, he is still listed as doubtful. Henry Anderson and Kelvin Beachum are two key players currently listed as questionable. Expect the Jets defense to be lacking, and their offensive line to struggle again after all of the change in responsibilities.
Linebacker Leon Jacobs, linebacker Najee Goode, and linebacker Quincy Williams are the only players listed as out for Jacksonville. With that in mind, expect the Jets to run off the back of their guards and tackles, and take them to the one weak spot the Jaguars have to offer. While the Jaguars are not in bad shape at all, the blow of three injured linebackers is big.
With these injuries, the Jets will run the ball quite heavily. Expect Le’Veon Bell to make an impact in this game no matter the end result. Passing will be a premium for the Jets. Only when needed it will be seen, as Sam Darnold’s confidence is nonexistent after his Monday Night Football hot mic. This game will be a bully game for Gardner Minshew. The Jaguars’ offense will run through a slumping Garden Minshew. While his stats might not show it, the Bengals kept last week competitive, and Minshew was not sharp. Against the horrid Jets defense, coaches will look to air the ball out to targets such as wide receiver Keelan Cole. Running back Leonard Fournette will get touches, but the idea of him making a great impact seems unnecessary. Against the Jets’ defense, Fournette simply won’t be needed, and should be kept fresh for later into this season.
The Jaguars should win and that is the bottom line. The Jets should not even be competitive after last week’s loss versus the Patriots. While the Jaguars have not looked great, it should be a beat-up game for a struggling team. Saying the Jets will cover the spread is not a wild statement, but them winning outright should simply not happen.
