Report: Bucs Release Vinny Curry

Vinny Curry’s time in Tampa is over.

The Bucs have cut ties with one of their big free agent signings after just one season, as Vinny Curry has been released by his team for the second consecutive year.

The Bucs have released the defensive lineman to free agency, clearing $8 million in cap space.

Tampa signed Curry to a three-year deal last offseason after he helped anchor the Eagles defense to a Super Bowl 52 championships. However, in Tampa, he never was able to duplicate the success he had in Philadelphia. Curry recorded just two-and-a-half sacks and 21 total tackles despite playing all 16 games in 2018.

Another factor that led to Curry’s release was the emergence of Carl Nassib who the Bucs signed following his release from the Browns after the preseason.

Nassib recorded six-and-a-half sacks with 29 total tackles proving to be a more reliable option at the defensive end position.

Curry’s release gives the Bucs more cap flexibility to help rebuild their defense this off-season. The Bucs still have among the least to spend in free agency of anyone in the league but having an additional eight million dollars to spend on their defensive rebuild can only help.

This release has the potential to be a win-win situation for both sides. The Bucs will be able to perhaps go after a more expensive free agent target such as Ronald Darby, and Curry will get a change of scenery to help reinvent himself.
