The Miami Dolphins have a lot of needs going into the 2019 NFL Draft –– most notably at the quarterback position. They’ve been lacking a playmaker at quarterback since Ryan Tannehill has underperformed, and likely to be released. Since quarterback is considered to be the most important positions in football, it would be wise for Miami to try and find a viable option. Who might that guy be? His name is Kyler Murray.
Murray is a natural playmaker that has been blessed with a great arm; thus leading him to the Heisman Trophy last year with the Oklahoma Sooners. He has great mobility and reads the field well. He does, however, need to fix some of his mechanics –– but he is a playmaker that showcased this when he played against Alabama in the Citrus Bowl back in January. Kyler Murray had 42 touchdowns and only seven interceptions in 2018; really impressive numbers. He also completed 69 percent of his passes this past season, totaling over 4,000 yards through the air in the process.
However, the Dolphins need to improve on more than just quarterback in order to compete in the future. Defensive end is also a huge need for this Miami front-seven –– as their best pass rusher is the recently-turned 37-year-old Cameron Wake. Charles Harris, who was the Miami Dolphins first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft, hasn’t really contributed the way the Dolphins thought he would. One name to watch is Montez Sweat, a defensive end out of Mississippi State and has been getting a lot of buzz since the senior bowl. The former Bulldog has great length and is a playmaker on the edge; wracking up 8.5 sacks in 2018, along with one forced fumble.
Lastly, the Miami Dolphins could benefit from adding depth at the offensive guard position. Since Jesse Davis has been inconsistent as a starter, Miami should be looking to the draft to add to their line. Chris Lindstrom, who is a senior at Boston College, would be a great selection if available at Miami’s pick in the second round (48th overall). He displays great power and good leverage, as well as dominating defensive lineman with his heavy hands.
The Miami Dolphins certainly have a lot of work to do in the offseason. Starting at quarterback, and then moving on to both the offensive and defensive line. Should they comply with their respective needs, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that the Dolphins can compete in 2019.
