Bergeron Continues on Road to Recovery

Since undergoing groin surgery back in June, Patrice Bergeron participated in three skating sessions with the Boston Bruins this preseason—Sunday being the latest.

The No. 1 center for the Bruins did not travel with the split squad to China and instead stayed back in Boston to continue his recovery. The goal is for Bergeron to return the lineup for the Bruins’ season opener against the Washington Capitals on Oct. 3.

“He’s back skating…I’m sure he would tell you he’d love to play a game of two, I don’t think its entirely necessary,” Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He’s coming up on a thousand, so one more game. But to get your timing back, you know, you still need live action so hopefully, he is able to play at some point this week.”

Bergeron missed the start of the last two seasons due to injuries. Two years ago the centerman missed the first three games due to an ankle and groin injury, and last year he missed the first five games due to a groin injury.

While Bergeron is not expected to be in the lineup Monday night when the Bruins take on the Philadelphia Flyers, the plan for him to hit the ice for the season opener remains unchanged.
