A lackluster first half that saw the Oklahoma City Thunder shoot just 32% from the field and trail 53-47 heading into the break. A six-point deficit despite nearly 20 more shot attempts than the Minnesota Timberwolves through the first half. The Thunder also allowed the Wolves to shoot over 50%. A testament to OKC’s number one-ranked defense.
Reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander struggled in this one, ending the first half with just four points. Despite a rough shooting night, Shai made an impact defensively, highlighted by a pass breakup on a lob pass meant for Rudy Gobert, and a block on Gobert in the third quarter. The block helped to spark a 25-9 Oklahoma City run that extended into the fourth quarter. SGA’s 20+ point-game scoring streak would live on thanks to a handful of made baskets and some made free throws in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. The streak extends to 128 games. He also finished with 10 assists.
The Thunder bench led the way, totaling over 60 points as a group. Led by a trio of Isaiah Joe (20 points), Alex Caruso (17 points), and Jared McCain (15 points). Consecutive three-pointers from McCain and Ajay Mitchell pushed the lead to 18 midway through the fourth quarter, and the Thunder never looked back.
The final five minutes were highlighted by a handful of made threes from Jared McCain, and a cool, calm, and collected SGA who’s and-one with 1:46 remaining pushed him past the 20-point mark.
Final score, Oklahoma City 116, Minnesota 103.
Minnesota will face Phoenix on Tuesday night. The Thunder will have Orlando next up, also on Tuesday night.
