Final Score: Colts 41, Titans 20

The Indianapolis Colts, who entered the contest with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2009, were strong favorites over the Tennessee Titans, who began 0-2 for the third time in four years. The Colts improved to 3-0 with a dominant 41-20 win over the Titans at Nissan Stadium. From the opening quarter, Indianapolis set the tone with opportunistic defense and a productive offense.

On the third play of the game, Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward floated a check-down intended for Tony Pollard and was intercepted by Kenny Moore II. Moore returned it for a 32-yard pick-six that gave the Colts a 7-0 lead in just 49 seconds. They never trailed.

Colts quarterback Daniel Jones ran the offense with efficiency, completing 18 of 25 passes for 228 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. Additionally, Jonathan Taylor showed that he remains one of the league’s top running backs with a 102-yard, three-touchdown performance, including a 46-yard rushing touchdown.

The Titans continued to be plagued by penalties (eight for 68 yards on Sunday) and questionable game management. There was a disastrous sequence in the second quarter when the Titans were threatening to close the 17-6 Colts’ lead. After three consecutive rushes in Colts territory for only nine yards, both teams used a timeout on 4th-and-1. The Titans followed with a delay of game penalty and a missed 62-yard field goal, which allowed the Colts to increase their lead to 20-6 with a field goal before the half.

While the Titans managed to put together a pair of scoring drives in the second half, it was not nearly enough to overcome the first-half deficit. The Colts kept the game out of reach with two rushing touchdowns from Jonathan Taylor and a receiving touchdown by Michael Pittman Jr.

Highlights

Looking Forward

Heading into Week 4, the Colts are looking like serious contenders with strong performances in all phases. Daniel “Indiana” Jones appears to be a totally different player behind a competent offensive line. Next, Indianapolis will travel to Los Angeles to take on a very good Rams team, which lost a close game to the Eagles in Week 3.

The Titans must correct mistakes quickly to avoid falling any further behind in the AFC South. Ward has continued to show flashes of greatness but has been hamstrung by penalties, drops, and play-calling. In Week 4, Tennessee will have another chance to earn its first win against another divisional opponent in Houston, who is also 0-3.
