Sports stars make millions during the peak of their career and most should be set up for the rest of their life.
However, life after competitive sport is tough for many athletes. Many struggle to achieve more success once their sporting days are over and very few athletes earn enough money to set them up for the remainder of their post-sporting lives. On a brighter note, there are some that have found second careers after retiring and have gone on to do great things.
In fact, some sports stars have made their real fortunes after their sports careers ended. Some have made millions in business, had successful political careers, and some have even prospered in brand names. Here are some athletes who have had great success after their sports careers ended.
1. Julie Foudy

Julie Foudy is known for her major accomplishments with the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team as a midfielder. From 1987-2004, she earned 274 caps, won two World Cups and gold medals at the 1996 and 2004 Olympics, and a silver in 2000. In 2007, she was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. As of 2022, Foudy is a sports analyst and a color commentator on ESPN soccer broadcasts and has a net worth of approximately $1.5 million.
2. Bill Bradley

Bill Bradley had an outstanding basketball career with the New York Knicks from 1967 to 1977. He won two NBA championships and was an Olympic gold medalist back in 1964. After retiring from the NBA in 1977, he went on to have an extremely successful political career. He served three terms as a Democratic U.S. Senator from New Jersey and ran for President of the United States in 2000. As of 2022, Bradley has a net worth of approximately $3 million.
3. Becky Hammon

Becky Hammon is a WNBA legend famous for playing as a point guard for the Aces from 2007 to 2014. She was a six-time All-Star selection in the WNBA, and she was recognized as one of the WNBA’s top 15 best players in league history in July 2011. Hammon retired from the WNBA in 2014 but her success didn’t stop. In 2014, she was hired by the men’s basketball team San Antonio Spurs as the first female assistant coach in the NBA. As of 2022, she is the head coach of the reigning WNBA Champion Las Vegas Aces, an NBA studio analyst, and has a net worth of approximately $1 million.
4. Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan is considered by many to be the best basketball player to have ever lived. His success didn’t stop when he retired in 2003. Jordan ventured with Nike to form the famous Jordan Brand. In 2010, Jordan became the majority owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, a team he once dominated. As if this wasn’t enough, Jordan wanted to be part of NASCAR, so he partnered with NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin to form a team in 2021. As of 2022, Jordan has a net worth of approximately $1.7 billion.
Sports stars are known for their amazing athletic abilities and some continue to shine beyond the court and the field. For the legends mentioned here, it was just the beginning of another chapter of success, unlimited by retirement.
