Panthers’ Matt Corral Likely Out for Season

Carolina Panthers third-round pick Matt Corral is likely out for the season with a Lisfranc injury, head coach Matt Rhule announced on Saturday.

How Did This Happen?

Corral suffered the injury at the end of the Week 2 preseason game against the New England Patriots. Corral backed up into the Patriots’ end zone and scrambled to avoid the safety. Footage from the game showed Corral’s foot being stepped on.

Corral was limping after the play and did not return for the remainder of the game. He underwent an X-ray postgame, then received an MRI back in Charlotte, N.C., to confirm the injury.

A Lisfranc injury is normally season-ending, which is unfortunate considering Corral had flashed potential throughout training camp and the preseason. The exact timetable for his recovery is unknown, but he will require surgery and isn’t expected to be ready for in-game action until after the regular season ends.

Does This Affect the Quarterback Competition?

Not quite, though it does affect the depth chart. If Corral wasn’t injured, the expectation was that Baker Mayfield would be listed as the starter, Sam Darnold as No. 2, and Corral at No. 3. Now, though, P.J. Walker could secure the third spot. However, there is also a chance that the Panthers leave that third spot open, instead giving them roster flexibility at other positions.

Was This Injury Preventable?

Yes and no. The Panthers were starting their backup offensive line when Corral was playing. Outside of Cade Mays and Pat Elflein, the Panthers have virtually no depth at the offensive line. Putting Corral behind a decent line with better weapons might have helped. At the same time, injuries are inevitable and can not always be controlled.
