Choosing the players who will succeed and benching the ones who will not is essential to winning in fantasy football. Each week, fantasy owners will have to make the tough decision to put a player they like on the bench because the truth is that player is a bust. The willingness to do so is what separates good managers from bad ones. Let’s take a look at five players who could bust in Week 12.
Mac Jones – QB, New England Patriots (vs BUF)
Jones has been a solid quarterback this year and is averaging 14.1 fantasy points per game, but this week he could disappoint. The Buffalo Bills have one of the top passing defenses in the league and have allowed the least fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks this season. If the Bills continue their defensive prowess, Jones will certainly have a bad week. Since he is not a top fantasy quarterback, Jones should be glued to the bench this week against a tough defense.
Melvin Gordon – RB, Denver Broncos (vs KC)
Gordon has been a good running back in fantasy football for his average draft position, averaging 12.5 points per game with seven total touchdowns on the year. However, with Javonte Williams continuing to impress, Gordon could be outshined in Week 13. Williams scored his second touchdown of the year last game and could receive more goal line work moving forward. If Gordon does not find the end zone, he could be a bust this week.
David Johnson – RB, Houston Texans (vs IND)
Johnson has been a poor back all season but is rostered in some leagues because of his increased workload over the past two weeks. The 29-year old back has received 10 or more carries in the past two games. Even with the increased touches, Johnson has not been able to score double-digit fantasy points in either one. In Week 13, the Texans are facing a tough run defense against the Indianapolis Colts, who allow the eighth-least fantasy points to running backs they have faced so far this season. With poor performances all season and a challenging opponent, it is likely Johnson is on the path to fantasy failure once again this week.
Jakobi Meyers – WR, New England Patriots (vs BUF)
Meyers has shown signs of improvement this season with two double-digit performances over the last three weeks, but he has been inconsistent all season. The third-year wide receiver is only averaging 11.1 fantasy points per game, which is not bad but does not give a lot of confidence to fantasy owners starting him. With a tough matchup against the Bills this week, it may be smart to leave Meyers on the bench if you have better options.
Cole Kmet – TE, Chicago Bears (vs ARI)
Kmet had a strong performance last week scoring 14.5 fantasy points against the Detroit Lions. However, his double-digit fantasy point performance was only his second of the year. In Week 13, the Bears are facing the Arizona Cardinals who have been excellent at limiting opposing tight ends as they have allowed the second-least points to opposing tight ends this year. With Kmet’s lack of consistent success this year and a tough matchup, benching him makes sense this week.
